Justin Upton’s two-run homer in the eighth inning powered the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals Sunday. The timely blow came just after the Royals had surged from behind by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh off Daniel Norris and Alex Wilson. J.D. Martinez homered earlier for the Tigers. Kansas City threatened in the ninth, but second baseman Ian Kinsler knocked down a vicious line drive by Alex Gordon. The ball was hit so hard it split Kinsler’s fingernail, but he held a runner at third base, and threw the bloody baseball to first to retire Gordon.

He left with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Domingo Santana home run in the second inning. Tyler Cravy, Jacob Barnes and Ben Rowan completed the shutout. Milwaukee broke the game open when Jonathan Villar hit a grand slam in the sixth. The Brewers piled on five more runs in the ninth, thanks to Santana’s second homer of the game, and a home run by Chris Carter.

The Brewers host the Chicago Cubs this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.
