MTU Volleyball Advances in NCAA Tourney – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night, Jeffers edged Kingsford 4-3.

On the hockey schedule tonight…
• Houghton welcomes Traverse City Central. Coverage begins at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Calumet entertains Hartland. Coverage starts at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In hockey tomorrow…
• Houghton hosts Hartland. Coverage begins at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Jeffers entertains Manistique at 1:00.
• Hancock hosts Traverse City Central at 1:00.

In girls basketball last night…
• Calumet crunched Iron Mountain 78-36. Four Copper Kings scored in double figures, led by Laina Kariniemi with 17. Marybeth Halonen collected 10 rebounds.
• L’Anse edged Lake Linden-Hubbell 52-49. Taylor Sanregret led the Purple Hornets with 24 points. Emily Jokela scored 21 for the Lakes, who finished the game with four players on the court because of foul problems.

On the girls schedule this evening…
• Houghton hosts Ishpeming.
• Hancock tips off at Jeffers.
• Baraga travels to Ontonagon.
• Chassell journeys to Watersmeet.

College Volleyball

The second-seeded Michigan Tech volleyball team outfought seventh-seed Wayne State 3-2 (25-16, 25-20, 18-25, 19-25, 15-8) in the opening game of the NCAA tournament yesterday. Anna Jonynas led the Huskies with 21 kills. Laura De Marchi finished with 45 assists, and set a new GLIAC career record. Tech will face Hillsdale in the regional semifinals this afternoon at 5:00 in Big Rapids. The Huskies swept the Chargers 3-0 in their earlier meeting this season. Host Ferris State will take on Missouri-St. Louis in the other regional semifinal.

College Basketball

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team opened its GLIAC campaign with a 77-69 victory at Northwood University last night. The Wildcats men’s team fell to the Timberwolves 81-72.

Both MTU hoops teams play at Northwood tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team plays at the University of Northwestern in Saint Paul tonight, and at North Central tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s team has the weekend off.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow night.

The NMU hockey team entertains Minnesota-Duluth tonight and tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s and women’s teams both play at Lake Forest this afternoon and tomorrow.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines will open their season with games in Nevada tonight and tomorrow night. The Wolves were invited out west by the Reno Ice Raiders. About 20 Calumet players will make the trip, along with a couple of coaches.  

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will entertain the New York Islanders tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

NBA

The Detroit Pistons’ winless streak reached eight last night, with a 114-103 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Jerami Grant scored 34 for Detroit.

The Pistons are off until Monday, when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Dallas Cowboys got past the New Orleans Saints 27-17. Saints quarterback Taysom Hill threw four interceptions.

On Sunday…
 • The Green Bay Packers have the weekend off.
 • The Detroit Lions entertain the Minnesota Vikings in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
 • The Denver Broncos visit the Kansas City Chiefs in the Sunday night contest. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Toledo Mud Hens have a new manager. Veteran minor-league skipper Gary Jones will take over for Tom Prince, who was fired in October, despite leading Detroit’s top farm team to a division title.

Snow Biking

The Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids Trails will host a Global Fatbike Day celebration tomorrow. The informal poker ride will feature five stops along the trails, along with light refreshments and a couple of bonfires. Riders should check in at 1:00, and group rides will begin at 1:30. Money raised will support trail grooming efforts this winter. For more details, click here.
