The 4th Line will hold a special meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Colosseum to discuss a fall fundraiser. They will also host a hockey equipment swap/buy/sell meet at the Coliseum between 6:00 and 8:00. Players can bring their equipment to sell or trade, or can come seeking equipment that they need. The 4th Line is a local group that supports youth hockey in the Calumet area. Anyone interested in helping the effort is invited to the meeting.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University soccer teams play at Mount Marty University in Yankton, South Dakota, this afternoon.

Finlandia’s Molly Berg has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. The former Hancock Bulldog turned in a great defensive effort as the Lions ended their 23-game losing streak with a 1-1 tie against Mount Mary on Saturday.

MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped a close 3-1 (24-26, 21-25, 29-27, 14-25) match to Northern Michigan University last night. MacAulay Petersen led the Huskies with 17 kills. Elle Heinonen had 19 digs.

MLB
Jed Lowrie’s grand slam off Alex Wilson in the eighth inning powered the Oakland Athletics to a 9-8 victory over the Detroit Tigers last night. Detroit had overcome an early deficit with home runs from Ian Kinsler, Alex Presley and Nicholas Castellanos. Starter Chad Bell struggled again, giving up three runs before leaving in the fourth inning.

The Tigers entertain the Athletics again this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will start against Daniel Mengden. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Chase Anderson tossed six scoreless innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 last night. Anthony Swarzak and Corey Knebel completed the shutout. Domingo Santana’s fourth-inning home run was the only score of the game.

The Brewers host the Pirates again tonight. Aaron Wilkerson will make his first major league start for Milwaukee. Steven Brault will counter for Pittsburgh.

The Cubs also won, so Milwaukee still trails Chicago by three and a half games in the National League Central Division. They are one game out of the second National League wild card berth.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings opened their preseason campaign with a 4-2 loss at Boston last night. Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. Jared Coreau and Petr Mrazek each gave up two goals, as they split time in net. The Wings skate at Pittsburgh tonight. We’ll broadcast Detroit’s regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

Our high school football coverage continues Friday, when Calumet entertains Hancock. The pregame show will start around 6:40 on KBear 102.3, and KBear102.com.
