MTU Women Advance, Men Fall – Thursday Sports Wrap

Calumet Copper Kings LogoHigh School
Calumet won the girls’ Class C District title last night with a 45-37 victory over Hancock. The Copper Kings will face Iron Mountain in the Regional semifinal Tuesday night at Escanaba. The Mountaineers advanced with a 64-59 triple-overtime victory over Norway.

Houghton-Gremlins-LogoIn Class B, Houghton shot out to a 16-4 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 47-29 victory over Kingsford. Michelle Laux led all scorers with 15 for the Gremlins. Sydney Dillinger added 11. The Gremlins will head to Escanaba for the District championship game tomorrow night at 7:00. The Eskymos eliminated Gladstone 46-27 last night. In Class D at Baraga…
Jeffers Jets Logo– Jeffers advanced to the District title game with an easy 60-25 victory over  Chassell. The Jets were up by 20 at halftime, powered by five three-pointers from Julia Nordstrom. Nordstrom led all scorers with 20 points. Haley Makela added 14. Karli Michaels led the Panthers with seven points.
– Ontonagon eliminated Baraga 51-38. The game was closer than the score indicates. The Vikings were up by a point at halftime, and the Gladiators led by a point at the end of the third quarter. Ontonagon began to pull away late in the game. Lori Wardynski sank eight free throws in the closing minutes to seal the win. Wardynski led all scorers with 20 points. Alyssa Preuss added 11 for Ontonagon. Gabby Mayo scored 15 for the Vikings, and Shayla Mayo added 12. Jeffers and Ontonagon will meet for the District crown Friday night at 7:00 at Baraga. In the state high school hockey tournament tonight, Houghton will face L’Anse at 6:00 at MacInnes Arena in the first Regional semifinal. Jeffers will take on Calumet at 8:00 in the second. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear 102.com.

GLIAC Hoops Tourney Opens
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team opened the GLIAC tournament with a 67-49 victory over Hillsdale. The Huskies raced out to an 18-4 lead, and were never challenged. As the top seed in the tournament, the Huskies will host the semifinals and finals this weekend. Tech will open against Grand Valley Saturday at noon. Ashland will take on Walsh in the other semifinal at 2:30. The championship game will be played Sunday at 2:00. Get full tournament information here.

Grand Valley advanced to the semifinal game by eliminating Northern Michigan 74-52 last night.

The Huskies’ men’s team was upset by Walsh 77-58. Walsh hit 15 three-pointers. Ben Stelzer led all scorers with 25 points. The Huskies still have a chance for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced Sunday night.

Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia baseball team continued its Florida trip yesterday with a 21-2 loss to Ohio Northern University, and a 24-1  loss to Bluffton University. The Lions will face Alvernia University twice today.

The Finlandia softball team fell to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 8-4 yesterday, and lost to Alvernia University 9-2. The Lions meet Otterbein University and Roanoke College today.

NHL – Red Wings Edge Rangers
Marek Zidlicky’s overtime goal lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers last night. Zidlicky was playing in his first game for Detroit, after being acquired in a trade on Monday. Jimmy Howard made 40 saves to earn the win. The Wings host the Flames tomorrow night. We’ll join the game after Houghton basketball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Fall to Pelicans
The Detroit Pistons lost to New Orleans 88-85 last night. Jodie Meeks led Detroit with 20 points, and Andre Drummond grabbed 18 rebounds. The Pistons have dropped four in a row, and play at Houston tomorrow night.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers edged the Orioles 5-4 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Nick Castellanos homered for Detroit. Anibal Sanchez gave up one hit over two scoreless innings in his first start of the spring. The Tigers face the Braves this afternoon. Alfredo Simon will start for Detroit. Hear the first pitch at 1:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Tigers released reliever Joel Hanrahan yesterday. Hanrahan had been trying to come back from Tommy John surgery, but experienced more pain in his elbow. Doctors now say he’ll need to have a second operation.

The Brewers took the field for the first time yesterday, and beat the University of  Wisconsin-Milwaukee 8-0. The Brewers open their Cactus League schedule this afternoon against the Angels.
