MTU Women Win in Final Second, Men Take Fifth Straight – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Houghton routed Negaunee 9-2.
– Calumet blanked Kingsford 8-0.

Calumet plays at Kingsford tomorrow.

The Wisigan Cup Tournament will be played this weekend. Tonight, Jeffers entertains Ashland, and L’Anse hosts the Wisconsin Northwest Icemen. Both games start at 7:00. Tomorrow, L’Anse welcomes Ashland at noon, and Jeffers hosts Northwest at 1:30.

In girls high school basketball last night…
– Hancock outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 50-37.
– Jeffers stopped Republic-Michigamme 68-31.
– Chassell cruised past Watersmeet 77-39.
– Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Bessemer 52-36.
– Ontonagon downed Wakefield-Marenisco 51-38.
– Baraga shut down L’Anse 39-27. The Vikings held the Purple Hornets without a point from the field until well into the second quarter, and led 21-11 at halftime. Casey Mleko of Baraga had 14 points to lead all scorers. Sarah Dix led L’Anse with nine.

In girls play tonight…
– Houghton visits Kingsford.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City travels to Wakefield-Marenisco for a game that was postponed from January 5th.

In boys high school hoops tonight…
– Calumet plays at Houghton.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City visits Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Chassell travels to Bessemer.
– Baraga hosts Republic-Michigamme.
– L’Anse tips off at Ewen-Trout Creek.

The North Central boys team will try to break Chassell’s all-time state record for consecutive wins tonight. The Jets will host Bark River-Harris, hoping to extend their winning streak to 66 games. The game will be broadcast live on the MHSAA website.

The Superior 7 co-op gymnastics team defeated Marquette 126.075 to 96.24 yesterday. Superior 7 was led by all-around champion Lily Kumpula with a 33.05, and second-place Sydney Polakowski 32.7.

The Houghton girls swim team defeated Marquette 96-89 yesterday. The boys lost to the Redmen 119-65.

Anderson

MTU
Morgan Anderson’s layup with less than a second remaining lifted the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team to a 49-48 victory over Grand Valley State last night. The game was close the whole way, and neither team led by more than two points through the entire fourth quarter. Anderson finished with 22 points.

Monroe

The Tech men’s team won their fifth straight game, defeating the Lakers 72-64. Four Huskies scored in double figures, led by Kyle Monroe with a game high 19 points.

Both Tech teams host Ferris State tomorrow. The women’s contest starts at 1:00, and the men’s game at 3:00.

The MTU hockey team skates at Alabama-Huntsville tonight and tomorrow night.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team dispatched Ferris State 66-42 last night. The men’s team battled the GLIAC-leading Bulldogs down to the wire, but fell 86-80. Both Wildcats teams will entertain Grand Valley State tomorrow.

The NMU hockey team plays at Bowling Green tonight and tomorrow night.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team plays a home-and-home series against Northland College this weekend. Tonight’s game is in Ashland. Tomorrow’s game will start at 7:00 at the Houghton County Arena. All the gate proceeds from tomorrow’s contest will be donated to the Pigs’n’Heat fund. All law enforcement officers and firefighters will be admitted free. The Pigs’n’Heat hockey game will be played next Saturday at the SDC.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team skates at Concordia-Wisconsin tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

Both Finlandia basketball teams host Wisconsin-Superior tonight. The women’s game starts at 6:30, and the men’s contest at 8:30 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. Both Finlandia hoops teams welcome St. Scholastica tomorrow. The women will begin at 2:00, and the men at 4:00.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Mosinee Papermakers for a pair of games this weekend. Tonight’s contest will begin at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. Tomorrow night’s faceoff is at 6:00.

The Calumet Wolverines welcome the Marquette Mutineers tonight and tomorrow night. Both games begin at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play at Miami tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

There will be no Pistons at the NBA All-Star game next month. The reserves were announced yesterday, and no Detroit players were included.

NHL
The NHL All-Star Game will be played Sunday. The Detroit Red Wings return to action Tuesday at home against the New Jersey Devils. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The NFL Pro Bowl will be played Sunday night. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford has declined an invitation to play in the Pro Bowl. The opportunity arose after Atlanta’s Matt Ryan was scratched because his team will play in the Super Bowl, and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers stepped aside because of an injury. Stafford also demurred, because of the finger injury that limited his performance over the final weeks of the season.
