MTU Women Win, Men Fall – Friday Sports Wrap

In boys’ high school basketball last night…
– Calumet shut down West Iron County 36-23.
– Hancock defeated Dollar Bay 48-39. The Bulldogs won despite dressing only six players for the game. Jared Peryam led Hancock with 20 points in only his second game of the season. Chad Raasio added 14 points. Devin Schmitz led the Blue Bolts with 12 points.
– Jeffers hung with Lake Linden-Hubbell for the first few minutes, but the unbeaten Lakes built a 28-point lead at halftime, a rolled to a 75-32 victory. Tyler Roose led all scorers with 21 points. Zach Nicholas led the Jets with 10.
– L’Anse defeated Chassell 63-54. Four Purple Hornets reached double figures. Chassell eighth-grader Abe Gockenbach scored 23.
– Baraga beat Ontonagon 67-58.

On the boys’ schedule tonight, L’Anse entertains Negaunee.

– Calumet entertains Detroit-Jesuit tonight and tomorrow. Tonight’s game is a 7:00 face-off. Tomorrow’s start times have been moved ahead because of the Lift Bridge closure. – Hancock plays at the Soo Invitational this weekend. The Bulldogs will face Birmingham Brother Rice this evening.

MTU Hoops Split with Ferris
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team rode a strong second half to a 65-50 victory over Ferris State University last night. The Huskies trailed by a point at halftime, but held the Bulldogs to just 14 points in the second half. Kylie Moxley led a balanced Tech attack with 15 points.

The Tech men’s team led by a point at halftime, but the Bulldogs turned it up late in the second half, and beat the Huskies 63-51. Jordan Chartier led MTU with 16 points.

Both Tech teams host Grand Valley State tomorrow. The women’s game starts at noon, and the men’s game at 2:00 at the SDC.

The Tech hockey team will try to regain its winning form tonight and tomorrow night against Bowling Green. Face-offs are at 7:30 at MacInnes Arena. After opening the season with 10 straight wins, and reaching number-one in the national rankings, the Huskies are 5-6-1 in their past 12 games.

NMU Hoops Falls to GVSU
Both Northern Michigan basketball teams lost to Grand Valley State last night. The women’s team trailed at halftime… came back to take the lead… but ultimately fell 68-61. The men’s team mounted a late comeback, but lost 62-53.

Both Wildcats teams will host Ferris State tomorrow afternoon.

The Northern Michigan hockey team skates at Alabama-Huntsville tonight and tomorrow night.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team skates at Northland College tonight, and hosts Northland Sunday afternoon at 4:00. The Finlandia women’s team entertains St. Norbert College tonight at 7:15, and tomorrow at 3:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

GLHL
In Great Lakes Hockey League play, the Portage Lake Pioneers host the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. The Calumet Wolverines will entertain the Ice Dogs tomorrow night at 7:30 at the Colosseum. As part of Hockey Weekend in Calumet, all kids wearing Calumet Ice Kings or Junior Kings Jerseys will get in free.

NHL – Red Wings Edge Blues
The Detroit Red Wings blew a two-goal lead in the third period, but bounced back to beat St. Louis 3-2 in overtime last night. Pavel Datsyuk scored the game-winner with two seconds remaining in the extra period. Petr Mrazek made 25 saves. After a six-game road trip, the Wings return home to host the Predators tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Visit Pacers
The Detroit Pistons play at Indiana tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NFL
The NFL Conference Championship games will be played on Sunday… the Packers at Seattle at 3:05, and the Colts at New England at 6:40. Hear both of Sunday’s games, and the Super Bowl, on the voice of the NFL playoffs, AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

MLB
Former Detroit Tigers’ outfielder Andy Dirks has signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays. The Jays had claimed Dirks off waivers from Detroit back in November, but then dropped him from their 40-man roster when they traded for outfielder Michael Saunders. Tigers’ reliever Luke Putkonen has cleared waivers, and has been assigned to Toledo.
