MTU’s Kearly Retires – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Michigan Tech football coach Tom Kearly is retiring. Kearly just concluded his 11th season as head coach for the Huskies. He had served the previous six seasons as an assistant to coach Bernie Anderson. Before that, he spent 19 seasons on the staff at Central Michigan University. In a university press release late yesterday, Athletics Director Suzanne Sanregret credited Kearly with elevating the program to one of the best in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference and NCAA Division II. University president Glenn Mroz added that Kearly build a culture of high expectations and accountability among the student athletes both on and off the field.

The release said that Kearly had been considering retirement for some time. The university will hold a press conference this morning at 9:30 to provide additional details about Kearly’s retirement, and the future of the team. To see MTU’s full press release, click here.

Michigan Tech freshman forward Gavin Gould has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week. Gould had three points in the Huskies’ sweep of Lake Superior State last weekend, including scoring the first goal of his career.

Northern Michigan University will also have a new football coach next season. The university is not renewing the contract of Chris Ostrowsky. Ostrowsky served five seasons as head coach, and two seasons before that as the team’s offensive coordinator. Director of Athletics Forrest Karr said Ostrowsky had worked tirelessly on behalf of the program. He compiled a record of 18 wins and 36 losses.

High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team will face Traverse City St. Francis in the quarterfinals of the state volleyball tournament tonight. The match begins at 7:00 at Charlevoix… a six-hour drive for Calumet, and a one-hour drive for St. Francis. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Thursday in Battle Creek.

The Detroit Pistons won their second-straight game last night, shutting down the Oklahoma City Thunder 104-88. Tobias Harris led a balanced attack with 22 points. Aron Baynes added 20, and grabbed eight rebounds while filling in for Andre Drummond. Drummond twisted his ankle in Saturday’s win at Denver. Coach Stan Van Gundy hopes to have him back in the lineup when the Pistons visit the New York Knicks tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Red Wings return to action tonight, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Wings will be without Niklas Kronwall, who is being given a few days off to rest his achy knee. Coach Jeff Blashill hopes to give the veteran a few such breaks through the season. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit Tigers’ pitcher Michael Fulmer capped an outstanding first season by winning the Baseball Writers Association of America Rookie of the Year Award yesterday. Fulmer becomes the fifth Tiger to win the honor, and the first since Justin Verlander in 2006. He received 26 of the 32 first place votes.
