NFL Schedules Released – Friday Sports Wrap

Little League

The Portage Lake Little League is asking parents of potential players for input on how to handle this summer’s schedule. League activities are currently suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey has been posted on the league’s website – you can access it here. League officials note that the typical May-June schedule will not be possible, but say they could consider a late-summer season, if players and volunteers will be available, and if pandemic restrictions allow.

The Baraga County Little League has already canceled its 2020 season. Keweenaw Little League has suspended operations, but has released no final decision on its summer schedule.

NFL

The NFL has released its 2020 season schedule, with some built-in concessions to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The regular season will open Thursday, September 10th, when the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans. The Super Bowl is scheduled for Sunday, February 7th. The first four weeks of the season are structured so that they could be canceled, or rescheduled and played at the end of the season, if COVID-19 concerns force a delay. Weeks three and four include no divisional games, and could be dropped if the season needs to be shortened by two weeks.

Assuming the campaign begins on schedule, the Detroit Lions will open at home against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, September 13th. They have no prime time games, although flex scheduling could create some late in the season if the team is competitive. The Thanksgiving afternoon game will be played against the Texans. See Detroit’s full schedule here.

The Green Bay Packers will begin their season September 13th at Minnesota. The Packers have five prime time games – September 27th at New Orleans, October 5th at home against the Atlanta Falcons, November 5th at San Francisco, November 29th at home against the Bears, and December 27th at home against the Tennessee Titans. See Green Bay’s full schedule here.

League officials have also confirmed that the controversial pass interference instant replay review that was tried out last season will not be used this year.

Finlandia University has introduced two more new athletes. Sam Herrholtz will join the men’s soccer team. He’s from Hubbard, Ohio. Jacob Wade is a baseball infielder from Southaven, Mississippi.
