NMU Hockey Called Off This Weekend – Thursday Sports Wrap

College Hockey

This weekend’s Northern Michigan University hockey series at Alabama-Huntsville has been postponed because of positive COVID-19 tests with the Chargers team. No make-up date has been announced.

After two weeks off because of COVID-19 problems of their own, the Michigan Tech hockey team is scheduled to return to the ice tomorrow and Saturday at home against Lake Superior State University.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons had a 17-point lead with seven minutes remaining, but wound up losing 123-115 to the Atlanta Hawks in overtime last night. Jerami Grant led Detroit with 32 points. His layup that would have won the game as the fourth quarter ended was blocked.

The Pistons host the Houston Rockets tomorrow evening.

Detroit will play without rookie guard Killian Hayes for at least the next two months. Hayes injured his hip in a game January 4th. An update released by the team yesterday indicated he will not need surgery, but will require at least eight weeks of rest and rehab.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Chicago Blackhawks tomorrow. Coverage begins at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have their new head coach. New Orleans Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell has signed a six-year contract. He replaces Matt Patricia, who was fired during his third season with the team. The extra-long deal is said to be the result of concerns that it will take some time for Campbell and new general manager Brad Holmes to sort out the mess that left the Lions near the bottom of the league the past two seasons. Holmes’ contract runs for five seasons.

Campbell was a tight end with the Lions for three seasons, and is the first former Detroit player to coach the team since Joe Schmidt in the 1960s.
