NMU Women Win NCAA Hoops Tourney Opener – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

The finals are set in the boys basketball tournament at the Breslin Center in East Lansing today.
• In Division Four, Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart will face Wyoming Tri-Unity at 10:00. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3.
• In Division Three, Niles Brandywine will play Detroit Old Redford at 4:30. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3.
• In Division Two, Warren Lincoln takes on Grand Rapids Christian at 6:45.
• In Division One, Orchard Lake St Mary’s meets North Farmington at 12:15.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech will host Minnesota State in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association semifinal tonight at 5:07. The Huskies are seeded fourth in the tourney, and the Mavericks fifth. Seventh-seed Lake Superior State plays at top-seed Bemidji State in the other semifinal. The winners will play for the Mason Cup Friday. The highest-seeded remaining team will host the game.

College Basketball

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team advanced to the round of 32 in the Division II NCAA tournament with a 69-56 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan last night. Jacy Weisbrod scored a career-best 29 points, and set a new school single-game record with nine three-pointers. The Wildcats will take on top-ranked Grand Valley State for the regional title tonight at 7:30 at Allendale.

The NMU men’s team opens tournament play tonight. The fourth-seeded Wildcats will meet fifth-seed Ferris State at 7:30 at the University of Indianapolis.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines both have this weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Sabres today. Coverage will begin at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons fell to the Heat 108-95 last evening. Simone Fontecchio led Detroit with 24 points.

The Pistons host the Heat again tomorrow, with coverage at 2:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB Spring Training

Half of the Tigers downed the Braves 6-1 yesterday. Matt Manning tossed four shutout innings, and allowed just one hit. Justyn-Henry Malloy homered.

The other half of the Tigers outslugged the Blue Jays 9-6. Keston Hiura hit a grand slam.

The regular Tigers will face the Pirates this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start. Tigers prospects will face Phillies prospects in the new Spring Breakout event.

The Brewers and Diamondbacks were rained out yesterday.

Today, half of the Brewers will face the Athletics – Jakob Junis will start. The other half take on the Rangers – Freddy Peralta will start.

NFL

The Packers have signed free agent safety Xavier McKinney. He played his first four NFL seasons with the Giants, and last year set personal highs in tackles, solo tackles, passes defensed and fumble recoveries. The Pack also re-signed linebacker Kristian Welch.
