NMU Women's Hoops Stuns MTU – Tuesday Sports Wrap

– Houghton defeated L’Anse 63-43. Sloane Zenner scored 21 for the Gremlins, and Alexis Francois led the Purple Hornets with 16.
– Chassell edged Baraga 41-40.
– Jeffers shut down Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 56-32.
– Ontonagon stopped Republic-Michigamme 44-22.

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team stunned Michigan Tech last night, 71-69. Bre Gaspervich’s layup with less than five seconds remaining provided the winning margin for the Wildcats. Gaspervich finished with a team-high 21 points. Kylie Moxley of the Huskies lead all scorers with 27 points. Danielle Blake finished with 19 points, but her shot at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime fell short.

The Tech men’s team built a 14-point halftime lead, and cruised to a 69-56 win over the Wildcats. The Huskies converted 33 of 41 free throws. Kyle Monroe led all scorers with 19 points.

The Detroit Pistons edged the Brooklyn Nets 105-100 last night. Andre Drummond led the effort with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Reggie Jackson overcame dehydration and cramps to score 19, and make some critical plays late in the game. The Pistons play at Boston tomorrow night.

The Detroit Red Wings return to action tomorrow night, at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Niklas Kronwall will not be rejoining the Red Wings anytime soon. Kronwall underwent arthroscopic knee surgery before the All-Star break. His recovery has not been as quick as was hoped. The team has placed him on Long Term Injured Reserve. That means the earliest he could return will be Valentine’s Day against the Bruins.
