Osterman Named “Miss U.P. Basketball” – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

Baraga’s Reide Osterman has been named “Miss U.P. Basketball” by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Osterman was also honored as Division Four Player of the Year. After a tournament run to the state semifinals, the Vikings were named Division Four Team of the Year, and Tyler Larson was named Division Four Coach of the Year. Calumet was named Division Three Team of the Year.

Osterman was the only local player placed on the U.P. Dream Team. Calumet’s Marybeth Halonen and Jana Loukus were named to the Divisions One through Three First Team. Hancock’s Bella Hebert and Houghton’s Meghan Trewhella and Paige Sleeman were placed on the second team. Hancock’s Kaisa Salani was an Honorable Mention. Local members of the Division Four First Team include Kate Borseth from Ewen-Trout Creek and Makennah Uotila from Ontonagon. The second team includes Baraga’s Corina Jahfetson, and Ewen-Trout Creek eighth-grader Emma Besonen. Baraga’s Makenna Hendrickson was a Special Mention, and Honorable Mentions include Ashlea Datto from Dollar Bay, Emily Jokela from Lake Linden-Hubbell, and Kiirsa Kolpack from Ontonagon.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team plays doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Stevens Point tomorrow and Sunday.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team has posted its 2022 schedule. The Huskies will open with a Thursday night home game against Wisconsin-Platteville September 1st. Other non-conference games include trips to St. Thomas September 10th, and Midwestern State September 17th. Homecoming will be October 8th against Wayne State, and the Huskies will host Northern Michigan in the Miner’s Cup game October 15th. See the full schedule here.

GLHL

The Great Lakes Hockey League tournament opens today in Appleton. The Calumet Wolverines are seeded fourth. They’ll begin pool play against the third-seed Fond du lac Bears this afternoon at 1:30, and then face the seventh-seed Marquette Mutineers tonight at 7:30. The Portage Lake Pioneers are seeded ninth. They’ll face the sixth-seed West Bend Bombers today at 4:15, and the top-seed Eagle River Falcons tomorrow morning at 8:00.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Ottawa Senators tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons broke their three-game losing streak with a 102-94 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers last night. Cade Cunningham scored 27, and Saddiq Bey added 20.

The Pistons visit the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 5-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday. Matt Manning gave up one run in his first three innings, but left as the Jays plated four in the fourth. Eric Haase homered.

The Tigers face the New York Yankees this afternoon. Tyler Alexander is scheduled to start. Coverage begins at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Los Angeles Angels 10-5 yesterday. Eric Lauer struggled, allowing six runs on seven hits before leaving in the fourth inning. Keston Hiura homered.

The Brewers play the Chicago Cubs this afternoon. Luis Perdomo will start.
