Ousdigian Wins Markham Memorial 5K – Saturday Sports Wrap

Running

Mark Ousdigian of Houghton took the title at the Aspirus Thatcher Markham Memorial 5k Run last night. Houghton’s Eric Houck came in second, with Justin Micillo of Rochester, New York, placing third. Kristen Monahan of Houghton was the top women’s finisher, with Chassell’s Lela Rautiola second, and Michele Reinke of Houghton third. See full results here.

Biking

The Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival opens today, with 15 and 28-mile XC races at the Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids Trails. Both events begin at 10:00. Enduro events for adults will take place tomorrow at the Tech Trails, along with kids XC and Enduro events. See full details here.

MLB

Jake Bauers hit for the cycle, as the Cleveland Indians buried the Detroit Tigers 13-4 last night. Cleveland rang up 17 hits. Ryan Carpenter gave up two runs in the second inning, then left as the Indians scored eight times in the fourth. Miguel Cabrera and Brandon Dixon homered for Detroit.

Bauers’ cycle came a day after Shohei Ohtani of the Angels accomplished the feat. It’s the first time two players have hit for the cycle on consecutive days since Tris Speaker and Chief Meyers did it in 1912.

The Tigers entertain the Indians again this evening. Gergory Soto has been called up to start against Shane Bieber. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Zach Davies suffered his first loss of the season, as the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the San Francisco Giants 5-3 last night. Davies gave up three runs over five innings.

The Brewers play at San Francisco again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Madison Bumgarner.

American Legion Baseball

The Copper Country Flames American Legion baseball team continues competition at the Rebel Invite in Rhinelander today and tomorrow, along with the host Rebels, the Marquette Blues, the Clintonville Diamondcats and the Everest team from Schofield.

High School

The 34th annual U.P. All-Star Classic basketball games will be played today in Newberry. Local girls on the North Team roster include Martina Jahfetson from Baraga and Jenna Pietila from Chassell. The boys North Team roster includes Matt Ojala from Calumet, George Butvilas from Houghton, Eddy Polakowski from Ontonagon and Brendon LeClaire from Dollar Bay.
