IHancock Hockey Logon high school hockey Saturday…
– Zach Ahola scored five times, as Hancock pounded Novi 11-3. Matt Sanregret added two goals for the Bulldogs.
– Bay Port scored with seven seconds remaining, and defeated Houghton 3-2.
– Calumet fell to Brighton 5-2.

Friday night…
– Zach Ahola’s goal with 2.1 seconds left in overtime lifted Hancock to a 3-2 victory over Bay Port. It was his second goal of the game.
– Calumet’s comeback from a 3-0 first period deficit fell short, and the Copper Kings lost to Novi 4-3.
– Houghton fell to Brighton 2-1 in overtime.
– Jeffers lost at Kingsford 6-2.

Tonight, L’Anse skates at Jeffers.

MTU Hockey Ties, Falls to NMU
After skating to a 3-3 overtime tie with Northern Michigan on Friday, the Michigan Tech hockey team fell 5-4 on Saturday.

Former Tech goalie Phoenix Copley’s first taste of the NHL was a short one. Copley was called up to the Washington Capitals so the Caps’ regular backup goalie, Justin Peters, could get some ice time with the minor-league Hershey Bears. Peters played two games at Hershey. Copley suited up for one contest with the Capitals. The two have now traded places again. You can read more about Copley’s experience here.

MTU Hoops Sweeps Ashland
MTU Huskies Logo
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams defeated Ashland Saturday. The women’s team cruised to an easy 63-39 victory. Danielle Blake led the Huskies with 16 points and seven rebounds.

The men’s team trailed by two at halftime, but came on strong in the second half to claim a 79-69 win. Five Huskies scored in double figures, led by Ben Stelzer’s  22 points.

NMU Hoops Sweeps Lake Erie
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team shut down Lake Erie 72-47 on Saturday. The Wildcats’ men’s team outscored the Storm 21-9 in the final five minutes, and claimed a 62-50 victory.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia Men’s Hockey Falls Twice in Minnesota
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision at St. Olaf College Saturday night. Friday night, the Lions lost at Gustavus Adolphus 4-2. Finlandia was outshot 74-34 in the two games.

Both Finlandia basketball teams play at Wisconsin-Marinette tonight.

Portage Lake Pioneers LogoGLHL – Pioneers Ground Falcons
In Great Lakes Hockey League play Saturday night, the Portage Lake Pioneers scored five goals in the third period, and beat the Eagle River Falcons 8-3. Ryan Sullivan had two goals and an assist for the Pioneers, and Zach Hill also scored twice.

NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Sabres
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Buffalo tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard’s groin injury has been diagnosed as a muscle tear. Doctors will continue their tests today, to try to determine how severe it is, and how much time he’ll miss. The team put him on injured reserve yesterday, and called Thomas McCollum up from Grand Rapids. McCollum will serve as a backup for Petr Mrazek. Regular backup Jonas Gustavsson remains sidelined with a separated shoulder.

NBA – Pistons Play at Toronto
The Detroit Pistons play at Toronto tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NFL Divisional Playoffs
Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, as the Green Bay Packers came from behind to beat the Dallas Cowboys 26-21 yesterday. Rodgers was slowed all day by his thigh injury, but still passed for 316 yards and three touchdowns. Eddie Lacy ran for 101 yards. The biggest play of the game came with four minutes remaining. On a fourth-down play, Dallas receiver Dez Bryant made a diving catch at the Green Bay one-yard line. Officials ruled it good, but the call was overturned after a replay review, giving the ball to the Packers.

Green Bay will face the Seahawks in the NFC Conference Championship game Sunday afternoon at 3:05.

The Colts and Patriots will meet in the AFC Conference Championship game Sunday evening. Indianapolis advanced with a 24-13 win over the Broncos yesterday.
