In high school football, Calumet’s season ended with a 48-7 loss to Menominee Saturday in the Division Five District Title Game. The Copper Kings’ only score came when quarterback Tyler Loukus plunged over the line on a one-yard run with 14 seconds remaining.

High School Volleyball Tourney
– In the high school volleyball tournament, Lake Linden-Hubbell won the Class D District title with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 25-18) victory over Ontonagon on Friday. The Lakes will face Forest Park in the Regional semifinal tomorrow evening at 6:00 at Negaunee. Stephenson will play Munising in the other Regional semifinal.
– In Class C tournament play, Calumet will face Iron Mountain in the regional semifinal tomorrow. That game will begin at 7:00 in L’Anse. Gwinn will face Indian River Inland Lakes in the other regional semifinal. If Gwinn and Calumet win on Tuesday, the regional final will be played Thursday at Negaunee. If Indian Lakes and Calumet win on Tuesday, the regional final will be played Thursday at Indian River.
– In Class B, Houghton lost to Kingsford 3-1 in the District championship game Friday night.

MTU Hockey Wins 8th Straight
The Michigan Tech hockey team won its eighth-straight game Saturday night, completing a sweep of Alaska-Anchorage with a 3-1 victory.The Huskies blanked the Seawolves 2-0 Friday night. Jamie Phillips stopped 19 shots in Friday’s shutout, and 26 shots on Saturday. See video highlights of Friday’s game and Saturday’s game.

The 20th-ranked MTU football team spotted number-22 Ashland an early lead, then scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, and went on to a 28-12 victory Saturday. Tech entered the game ranked sixth in the NCAA regional playoff standings. Ashland was ranked seventh, so the victory bolsters the Huskies’ chances for a playoff berth. MTU closes the regular season at home against Lake Erie next Saturday. See video highlights here.

The Tech volleyball team defeated Northwood 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 26-24) Friday afternoon. The Huskies wrapped up their regular season with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-16) win over Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon. The Huskies’ fifth-place finish in the GLIAC North did not qualify them for the conference tournament.

The MTU soccer team’s season ended with a 5-0 loss to Grand Valley State in the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament Friday. With a record of 11-4-2, the Huskies still have a chance to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced today.

NMU Athletics LogoThe 20th-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Friday night, falling 1-0 to Ferris State in overtime. The Wildcats bounced back, and shut out the Bulldogs 2-0 on Saturday.

The third-ranked Ferris State football team scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, and came from behind to beat NMU 35-17 Saturday afternoon.

Finlandia V’Ball Falls in GSAC Final
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia volleyball team advanced to the Great South Athletic Conference semifinals by defeating Pine Manor 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-21) Friday. The Lions advanced to the finals by beating Agnes Scott College 3-1 (13-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16) Saturday afternoon… then fell to Salem College 3-0 (18-25, 14-25, 16-25) in the final. Augustine Brutus from the Lions was named to the All-Conference Team, and Emma Nelson was named to the All-Freshman Team.

The Lions’ soccer team lost 8-0 to Wesleyan College in the opening round of the GSAC tournament on Friday. Erica Sandoval was named to the All-Conference Team, and Taylor Bowen was named to the All-Freshman Team.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team opened NCHA play with a 7-1 loss at top-ranked Saint Norbert Friday night, then fell to the Green Knights 12-0 on Saturday. Saint Norbert outshot Finlandia 46-8 in Saturday’s game.

The Lions’ women’s team fell to Saint Scholastica 8-0 Friday evening, the lost to the Saints 4-0 Saturday.

NHL – Red Wings
Red Wings LogoThe Detroit Red Wings came from two goals down to force overtime in last night’s game against the Lightning, but wound up losing 4-3 in a shootout. Gustav Nyquist had a goal and an assist, and Jimmy Howard stopped 30 shots in the loss. The Wings are off until Friday, when they host the Blackhawks.

The Detroit Pistons squandered an 11-point lead, and lost to the Jazz 98-97 last night. The Pistons play at Chicago tonight.

Matthew Stafford hit Theo Riddick with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds remaining, and the Lions defeated the Dolphins 20-16 yesterday. Calvin Johnson had seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown in his first game back from an ankle injury. Detroit improves to 7-2, and will play at Arizona Sunday afternoon. Aaron Rodgers threw six touchdown passes in the first half, as the Packers routed the Bears 55-14 in the Sunday night game. The Packers host the Eagles next Sunday afternoon.
