Pietila Scores Five in Houghton Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey Friday night…
– Reid Pietila scored all five goals for the Gremlins as Houghton defeated Utica Eisenhower 5-1.
– Calumet scored a goal in each period, and defeated Rochester United 3-1. Ian Carroll saved 28 of 29 Rochester shots to earn the victory, allowing only a power play goal early in the second. Robert Erkkila led the Kings with a goal and an assist.
– Jeffers fell to East Grand Rapids 5-3 at the Gaylord D-3 Challenge.

Today…
– Houghton hosts Rochester United. Our pregame coverage begins around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Calumet entertains Utica Eisenhower.
– Hancock travels to Escanaba.
– Jeffers faces Chelsea at the Gaylord D-3 Challenge.

In high school girls basketball last night…
– Houghton fell to Negaunee 59-47. Sloane Zenner scored a personal best 25 points for the Gremlins. See video highlights from the game here.

– Hancock defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 36-26.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell stopped Ewen-Trout Creek 62-21.
– Ontonagon edged Baraga 38-35.
– L’Anse fell to Westwood 51-42.

The Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie at Lake Superior State Friday night. Alex Petan scored the Huskies’ only goal, and Jamie Phillips made 20 saves.  Tech skates at the Soo again tonight.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Wayne State Sunday.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team fell to Ferris State 4-2 Friday night. Those teams meet again tonight in Marquette.

Both NMU basketball teams play at Findlay this afternoon.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia
With two players missing because of injuries, the Finlandia University women’s basketball team lost 79-46 at Wisconsin-Superior Friday night. Dollar Bay’s Julia Daavettila led the Lions with 14 points and five rebounds.

The Finlandia men’s team dropped an 83-76 decision at Wisconsin Superior Friday night. The Lions battled back from an 18-point deficit in the second half, but couldn’t close the gap. Marcus Geralds scored 22 for Finlandia.

Both Finlandia basketball teams play at at the College of St. Scholastica today.

Walker Enstad made a career-high 48 saves, but the Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 3-0 to Wisconsin-River Falls Friday night. The Lions were outshot 51-11 in the game, They skate at River Falls again tonight.

The Finlandia women’s team fell to Wisconsin-Eau Claire 8-0 on Friday. The Lions were outshot 70-8. They will skate at Hamline University this afternoon.

In Great Lakes Hockey League play…
– The Calumet Wolverines defeated the DePere Deacons 4-3 in overtime Friday night. Logan Rastello netted the game-winner. The Wolverines visit the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight.
– The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game at Mosinee was not reported. The Pioneers face the Papermakers again tonight.

NHL
Red Wings LogoThe Detroit Red Wings led 2-0 going into the third period, but wound up losing to the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in overtime.  Kyle Palmieri’s backhander over Jimmy Howard’s shoulder was the game-winner, with just 39 seconds remaining in the extra period. The Wings host the Buffalo Sabres Monday night.

The Detroit Pistons cruised past the Philadelphia 76ers 107-95 Friday night. Marcus Morris scored 21 points. Andre Drummond added 18 points and 16 rebounds to drop the Sixers to a lowly 1-23 record this season. The Pistons will host the Pacers tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The Detroit Lions visit the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Green Bay Packers host the Dallas Cowboys in a 4:25 game.
