Pioneers Claim Gibson Cup Opener – Saturday Sports Wrap

Gibson Cup

The Portage Lake Pioneers grabbed the early advantage in the Gibson Cup series with a 5-4 overtime victory over the Calumet Wolverines at the Colosseum last night. Aaron Sturos opened the scoring with a Pioneers goal early in the first period. Brendan Jacques brought the Wolverines even midway through the first period, and Eric Bausano gave Calumet its only lead of the contest midway through the second. Portage Lake quickly regained the advantage with goals by Cody Sivonen and Aaron Sturos. Stephen Dudenas tied the score with a Calumet goal early in the third. Portage Lake retook the lead with Sivonen’s second goal of the night. The Wolverines forced overtime when Tyler Loukus found the net with four-and-a-half minutes remaining in regulation. Bryan Lepisto’s goal three-and-a-half minutes into the extra period was the game-winner.

Game two of the best-of-three series will be played tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. Game three, if needed, will be played tomorrow at 6:30 at the Colosseum. Hear the games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Milwaukee Brewers outslugged the Chicago Cubs 13-10 last night. Ryan Braun, Orlando Arcia, Hernán Pérez, Yasmani Grandal, and Eric Thames homered for Milwaukee. Brandon Woodruff threw three scoreless innings, but left after giving up four runs in the fourth. He struck out eight batters. Chase Anderson got the win in relief.

The Brewers host the Cubs again tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Cole Hamels.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will wrap up their season at home tonight against the Buffalo Sabres.

NBA

Blake Griffin returned and scored 45 points, but the Detroit Pistons lost 123-110 to the Oklahoma City Thunder last night. Griffin showed no ill effects from the sore knee that forced him to the bench for three games. The loss dropped Detroit out of sixth place in the Eastern Conference, and into a tie with the Brooklyn Nets for the final two playoff spots, with three regular-season games remaining. The Pistons will host the Charlotte Hornets tomorrow afternoon.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University baseball team will play doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Stout today and tomorrow. Because of poor field conditions in Menominie, the games have been moved to the Sun Prairie High School field near Madison.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team has introduced a new recruit. Mylea Harangozo is a high school team captain from Manitou Springs, Colorado.
