Pioneers Keep Cup – Saturday Sports Wrap

The Calumet girls basketball team will face Flint Hamady in the Class C championship game this afternoon at 4:00. The Copper Kings enter the game with a record of 23-2. The Hawks are 26-1.

Win or lose, a welcome home celebration to salute the Copper Kings will be held at the Calumet High School gym tomorrow afternoon at 4:00.

The Copper Kings will be joined in the finals by perennial Upper Peninsula powerhouse Saint Ignace, The Saints will face Pittsford in the Class D championship game this morning at 10:00.

All of the finals will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.

Pioneers Take Gibson Cup

Portage Lake Pioneers LogoThe Portage Lake Pioneers retained possession of the storied Gibson Cup by defeating the Calumet Wolverines 5-1 Friday night. Eric Bausano gave the Wolverines an early lead, but the Pioneers responded quickly, and led 3-1 at the end of the first period. Alex Roy’s third goal of the series was the game-winner. Mike Madosh finished with 34 saves for Portage, and Ryan Patrick had 42 for Calumet. The Pioneers took the first game of the best-of-three series Thursday night, 7-6. Both teams look forward to the Great Lakes Hockey League playoffs next weekend in Houghton. We’ll broadcast all the game involving the Pioneers and Wolverines on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

MTU Hockey to WCHA Final
The Michigan Tech hockey team defeated Bowling Green 5-2 Friday night, and advanced to the WCHA championship game. The Huskies spotted the Falcons an early goal, but took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period after scores by Reid Sturos and Tyler Heinonen. Bowling Green tied the game early in the third period, but Heinonen scored his second goal several minutes later, and Mike Neville and Joel L’Esperance added insurance tallies. The second-seeded Huskies will face top-seeded Minnesota State for the Broadmoor Trophy tonight at 7:07 in Saint Paul. The Mavericks shut out Ferris State 4-0 in Friday’s other semifinal. Tech’s record against MSU in the regular season was 0-3-1.

NHL – Red Wings Fall to Lightning
The Detroit Red Wings’ struggles continued Friday night, with a 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay. Tomas Tatar scored Detroit’s only goal. Jimmy Howard took the loss, despite stopping 29 of 31 shots. The Wings have lost six of their last eight games, and will host the Blues tomorrow afternoon. Face-off is at noon on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Prepare for Bulls
The Detroit Pistons host the Bulls tonight.

Alfredo Simon gave up six runs in the first inning, and the Yankees pounded the Tigers 11-2 Friday. Simon rebounded with two scoreless innings. Yoenis Cespedes homered for Detroit, and Rajai Davis had three hits. The Tigers face the Mets this afternoon. David Price will start.

Price will also start for the Tigers on opening day against the Twins on April 6th. It’s the first time since 2007 that Justin Verlander has not been the opening day starter.

Ryan Braun hit his first home run of the spring, and the Brewers defeated the Diamondbacks 4-3 Friday. Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson pitched into the fourth inning, and gave up all three Arizona runs. The Brewers will play the Rangers this afternoon.

Milwaukee has assigned reliever Jim Henderson to minor league camp. Henderson is trying to come back from shoulder surgery.
