Pioneers Win GLHL Tourney – Monday Sports Wrap

GLHL TrophyPioneers Take GLHL Title
The Portage Lake Pioneers grabbed an early lead, and then hung on to defeat the West Bend Bombers 4-3 in the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament championship game yesterday. Blake Miller scored four minutes into the first period to put the Pioneers on top. Alex Roy, Dave Sproule and Ted Pietila scored in the second period. Portage Lake survived two goals from the Bombers’ Scotty Holtz in the third period to take the title. The Pioneers outshot West Bend 36-26.

The Pioneers advanced to the championship game with a 6-1 victory over the Calumet Copper Kings in the semifinals Saturday night. The Bombers defeated the Fond du Lac Bears 6-4 in the other semi. For full results, check our Saturday and Sunday sports wraps at KeweenawReport.com.

MSU to Final Four
The Michigan State men’s basketball team defeated Louisville 76-70 in overtime last night, and advanced to the NCAA tournament semifinals. The Spartans will face Duke Saturday evening at 6:09. Kentucky and Wisconsin will play in the second semifinal Saturday at 8:49. Hear both games, and the championship game, on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Finlandia Lions New Logo FeatureFinlandia
The Finlandia University softball team lost two at Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday, 10-1 and 2-0. The Lions dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Calvin College Friday, 8-0 and 17-4.

The Finlandia baseball team dropped two games at Cardinal Stritch University on Saturday, 13-0 and 2-1. The Lions had two more games scheduled at Stritch yesterday, but they were rained out.

Red Wings LogoNHL – Red Wings Fall to Islanders
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the New York Islanders 5-4 last evening. A day after turning in his second shutout of the season, Petr Mrazek gave up three goals in the first period, and was replaced by Jimmy Howard after allowing a fourth in the opening seconds of the second period. The Wings host the Senators tomorrow evening. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit Pistons LogoNBA – Pistons Lost to Heat
The Detroit Pistons fell to the Miami Heat 109-102 last evening. Andre Drummond scored 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Pistons. Reggie Jackson had 31 points and nine assists. The Pistons host the Hawks tomorrow night.

Anibal Sanchez struck out 10 over 6-1/3rd innings, as the Detroit Tigers and the the Philadelphia Phillies played to a 4-4 tie yesterday. Sanchez also gave up three home runs. Tyler Collins and Yoenis Cespedes homered for Detroit. The Tigers face the Braves this afternoon. Alfredo Simon will start.

Justin Verlander did some light tossing yesterday. It’s the first throwing he’s done since leaving Friday’s game with tightness in a triceps muscle. Verlander reported the arm still felt a bit tight, but had improved.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Athletics 7-0 yesterday. Milwaukee starter Michael Blazek allowed three runs on four hits over 3-2/3rds innings. The Brewers have today off, and will play the Reds tomorrow.
