Pioneers, Wolverines Meet in Hockeyville Warm-Up Tonight

High School

In high school volleyball tonight…
– Calumet hosts Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Houghton entertains L’Anse.
– Hancock travels to West Iron County.
– Jeffers welcomes Baraga.
– Chassell journeys to Ewen-Trout Creek.
– Ontonagon hosts Wakefield-Marenisco.

In cross country, Calumet and Chassell will run at the Munising Invitational.

Finlandia

Finlandia University football player Ashton McNeil has been named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week. McNeil had 12 tackles, six assists, two sacks, and forced a fumble in the Lions’ loss to Concordia-Chicago Saturday.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech volleyball team will host Northern Michigan in a homecoming week game tonight at 7:00 at the SDC.

Tech’s Laura De Marchi has been named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week. De Marchi tallied 89 assists in the Huskies’ wins over Davenport and Grand Valley State.

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines will play an exhibition match tonight at the Colosseum. It’ll be our first chance to see how the historic rink has been decked out for Thursday’s Kraft Hockeyville USA contest. Two former Red Wings will serve as honorary coaches – Kirk Maltby for the Wolverines, and Drew Miller for the Pioneers. Tickets will be available at the door for just $5.00. The puck drops at 8:00, and our pregame coverage will start at 7:45 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Minnesota Twins tonight. Spencer Turnbull will pitch against Jake Odorizzi. Pregame coverage begins at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers also had last night off, and open a series in Cincinnati this evening. Adrian Houser will start against Sonny Gray.

The Cardinals and Nationals won last night. Saint Louis now leads Milwaukee by 3.5 games in the National League Central Division. Washington takes a half-game lead over the Brewers as the two teams battle for home field advantage in the wild card game.

NHL

Anders Lee’s goal in overtime lifted the New York Islanders to a 3-2 preseason victory over the Detroit Red Wings last night. Michael Rasmussen and Evgeny Svechnikov scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 40 saves.

The Wings visit the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow night.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Chicago Bears built a big early lead, and cruised past the Washington Redskins 31-15. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least 12 games correctly to qualify to be our weekly winner.

The Packers have lost guard Lane Taylor for the rest of the season. He’ll need surgery to repair a torn biceps muscle.

The Detroit Red Wings face the Saint Louis Blues Thursday at the Colosseum in the Kraft Hockeyville game. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3, with an extended pregame show beginning at 6:00.
