MLB

Jordan Zimmermann took a perfect game into the seventh inning, as the Detroit Tigers opened their 2019 campaign with a 2-0, 10-inning victory over the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday. Teoscar Hernández’ infield single ended the no-hit bid. Joe Jiménez, Victor Alcántara and Shane Greene each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the shutout. Alcántara got the win, and Greene earned the save after Christin Stewart’s two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning broke the scoreless tie.

The Tigers play at Toronto again tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Matt Shoemaker. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Lorenzo Cain’s leaping grab of a long fly ball at the right-center field fence with two outs in the ninth inning preserved the Milwaukee Brewers’ 6-5 opening day win over the Saint Louis Cardinals. Starter Jhoulys Chacín pitched into the sixth inning, gave up three runs, and became the first Milwaukee pitcher to hit a home run on opening day. Mike Moustakas and Christian Yelich also homered. The Brewers host the Cardinals again tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Jack Flaherty.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings won their third straight game last night, edging the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 in overtime. Tyler Bertuzzi’s second goal of the evening was the game-winner. Dylan Larkin also scored twice, and Filip Hronek found the net. Jimmy Howard made 35 saves. The Wings host the New Jersey Devils tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons earned a badly-needed 115-98 victory over the Orlando Magic last night. Wayne Ellington scored 25 points. The win moved Detroit back into sixth place in the NBA Eastern Conference. The Pistons entertain the Portland Trail Blazers tomorrow night. Pregame coverage starts at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Finlandia University baseball team is scheduled to play two games at Wisconsin-Oshkosh tomorrow, and another game on Sunday.

High School

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has made a change to next year’s hockey season. The season will start and end at the same time, but the two-week playoff will be extended to three weeks, with a corresponding one-week reduction in the regular season. An MHSAA spokesman said the feeling was that six potential playoff games in a two-week stretch was too intense, and that athletic directors felt they could still work 25 games into a shorter regular season.

Hockeyville

Voting begins tomorrow morning at 7:00 in the Kraft Hockeyville 2019 competition. Cast as many votes as you can at KraftHockeyville.com until Sunday morning at 11:00. If the Colosseum outpolls the other three finalists, we’ll win $150,000 for rink improvements, and an NHL pre-season game next fall.
