Pistons Set Suns – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

Saint Ignace advanced to the championship game of the Division Four state girls basketball tournament with a 48-44 victory over Kingston yesterday. The U.P.’s only remaining team in the state tournament will face Adrian Lenawee Christian tomorrow morning at 10:00. Lenawee Christian defeated Chassell to win last year’s state title. Pewamo-Westphalia will play Flint Hamady in the Division Three championship game at 4:00 tomorrow. We’ll also broadcast that contest on KBear 102.3.

The Division One and Two semifinals will be played today.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines will host the Marquette Mutineers tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 at the Colosseum. The Wolverines will wrap up their regular season tomorrow night at Eagle River. Calumet trails league-leading West Bend by two standings points. The Bombers have one game remaining.

The Portage Lake Pioneers will host the Mutineers tomorrow night at 7:30 at Dee Stadium to conclude their regular campaign.

The GLHL playoffs begin a week from today. We’ll broadcast all of the Pioneers and Wolverines games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings’ modest two-game win streak ended with a 5-2 loss to the Saint Louis Blues last evening. Thomas Vanek scored both Detroit goals. Jonathan Bernier made 19 saves. The Wings visit the Vegas Golden Knights tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 9:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons used a late surge to put away the Phoenix Suns 118-98 last night. Wayne Ellington scored 23 points to lead Detroit for the second game in a row. Andre Drummond had 19 rebounds. The Pistons visit the Portland Trail Blazers tomorrow night.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers scored early, and held on to defeat the Houston Astros 5-3 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Jeimer Candelario homered twice, and Miguel Cabrera hit one out. Matt Moore gave up three runs before leaving in the fifth inning. The Tigers will face the Atlanta Braves this evening. Listen for Tigers baseball again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-5 in Cactus League action yesterday. Tyler Saladino and Yasmani Grandal homered. Starter Corbin Burnes gave up three runs over five innings. The Brewers will take on the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon.

Milwaukee reliever Corey Knebel will open the season on the disabled list. He’s been diagnosed with what manager Craig Counsell described as “an issue with the UCL” in his pitching elbow. Further examinations are scheduled.
