Pistons Win, Wings Fall – Friday Sports Wrap

Zetterburg

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 last night. Franz Nielsen, Danny DeKeyser and Mike Green scored for the Wings. Henrik Zetterburg’s assist on DeKeyser’s goal was his 900th NHL point. Petr Mrazek made 26 saves, and took the loss. The Wings will entertain the Toronto Maple Leafs tomorrow night.

The Wings are getting a little thin at forward. Anthony Mantha broke a finger during a fight in the first period last night. Detroit lost Luke Glendening for the season on Monday because of  a fractured ankle. Both will miss the rest of the season.

Morris

NBA
The Detroit Pistons snapped their five-game losing streak with a narrow 90-89 victory over the Brooklyn Nets last evening. Marcus Morris carried the team with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Ish Smith added a season-high 21 points, including a critical three-point shot in the closing seconds. The Pistons play at Milwaukee tonight. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Piston Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was arrested Wednesday night for drunk driving. Auburn Hills police pulled him over for speeding, and smelled alcohol. They say his blood alcohol level registered at .08 percent – right at the legal limit.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team plays a doubleheader at Lawrence University tomorrow.

The Lions baseball team plays a pair at Lakeland University tomorrow afternoon.

MTU
Another Michigan Tech hockey player has signed a pro contract. Senior defenseman Chris Leibinger will join the Quad City Mallards of the East Coast Hockey League tonight for their game against the Alaska Aces. Former Tech All-American and WCHA Player of the Year Alex Petan is an assistant captain on the Mallards.

High School
The Michigan High School Athletic Association is expanding the eight-player football playoffs. The number of schools fielding eight-player teams has passed 60, and continues to grow. Beginning this fall, those schools will now be split into two divisions, based on enrollment. The top 16 teams from each division will make the playoffs, and two titles will be awarded.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines open pool play play in the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament today. The Pioneers face the Eagle River Falcons at noon. Our broadcast will begin around 11:45 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The Wolverines will take on the Marquette Mutineers at 12:30. We’ll provide updates from that game during our Pioneers broadcast. Calumet will face the Fond du Lac Bears tonight at 7:00. Our pregame coverage will start around 6:45. The Pioneers will conclude pool play against the Mosinee Papermakers tomorrow at 11:30. Our coverage will start around 11:15. The three pool winners and one wild card team will advance to the semifinals. We’ll follow the Pioneers and Wolverines as far as they go on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Boyd

MLB
In spring training baseball, Matt Boyd capped his impressive preseason with four scoreless innings, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 yesterday. Anibal Sanchez followed with four effective innings, giving up just one run on three hits. Minor league reliever Arcenio Leon gave up a two-run homer in the ninth. Omar Infante, Tyler Collins and James McCann homered for Detroit. The Tigers will face the Miami Marlins tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will make his final spring start.

Pelfrey

The Tigers released pitcher Mike Pelfrey yesterday. The team still owes him eight-million dollars from the two-year free agent contract he signed at the beginning of last season. He struggled all last year, and again this spring. They also placed reliever Daniel Stumpf on waivers. Meanwhile, former Detroit reliever Mark Lowe has signed a minor-league contract with the Seattle Mariners. Lowe was released a few days ago, with five-and-a-half million dollars remaining on his contract.

Garza

The Milwaukee Brewers were off yesterday. They’ll close their preseason by hosting the Chicago White Sox in a pair of exhibition games tonight and tomorrow afternoon at Miller Park.

The Brewers will open their season without pitcher Matt Garza. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a groin strain yesterday. Junior Guerra, Zach Davies, Wily Peralta, Chase Anderson and Jimmy Nelson will open the season in the starting rotation.

The semifinals of the NCAA Division One Men’s Basketball Tournament will be played tomorrow night. We’ll broadcast them, and the championship game on Monday, on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
