MLB – Tigers Fall
The Kansas City Royals ripped Alfredo Simon for six runs, and routed the Detroit Tigers 8-1 last night. KC scored three runs in the third inning… then five in the fifth off Simon and reliever Alex Wilson. Meanwhile, Royals’ starter Danny Duffy held the Tigers to just one run over seven innings. The win gives Kansas City a half-game lead over Detroit in the American League Central Division.

The Tigers continue that series at Kansas City tonight. Kyle Lobstein will start against Chris Young. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Rondon
Rondon

Detroit reliever Joe Nathan says his Tommy John surgery went well on Wednesday. Nathan will miss the rest of the season. At age 40, he says he hopes to come back to the majors next year. Meanwhile, reliever Bruce Rondon threw to hitters yesterday for the first time since he was sidelined with biceps tendinitis at the end of spring training. If he feels all right, he will likely do a similar session again next week, before the Tigers consider a rehab assignment.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a set against the Cubs in Chicago this afternoon. Wily Peralta will pitch against Jon Lester.

High School
In high school softball yesterday, L’Anse took two games from Hancock, 14-4 and 13-6. Calumet won both ends of a doubleheader against Lake Linden-Hubbell, 11-1 and 11-7. Calumet plays at Jeffers tomorrow.

In baseball today, Houghton plays at Norway.

NFL Draft – First Round
The Detroit Lions used their first pick in the NFL draft last night to pick Duke guard Laken Tomlinson. The Lions actually traded down in the first round… giving their 23rd pick to the Denver Broncos in exchange for the 28th pick, a fifth-round pick this year, a fifth-round pick next year, and guard Manny Ramirez. Ramirez began his career with Detroit in 2007. Tomlinson can play all three interior positions on the offensive line. He graduated from Duke with two degrees, and hopes to become a neurosurgeon after his NFL career ends.

Randall

The Green Bay Packers bolstered their defensive backfield by taking Damarious Randall from Arizona State with the 30th pick. Randall could play either safety or defensive back.

The Buccaneers used the first pick in the draft to take Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston. The draft continues tonight and tomorrow.
