Run the Keweenaw Opens Today – Saturday Sports Wrap

MLB
The Detroit Tigers were shut out 3-0 by the Houston Astros last night. Houston got off to a quick start, scoring twice off Mike Fiers in the first inning, and adding a run in the third. Fires completed six frames, and took the loss. Detroit’s best scoring opportunity came when they loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but they couldn’t break through.

The Tigers have dropped five straight, and 19 of their their last 23 games. They’ll play at Houston again today. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Gerrit Cole. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Junior Guerra struggled, as the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 last evening. Guerra allowed six runs over five innings. Reliever Brandon Woodruff, who had just been recalled from Colorado Springs, threw three scoreless innings, and hit his first major league home run.

The Brewers continue that series with a doubleheader at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Chase Anderson will start against Ivan Nova in the first game. Brent Suter will pitch against Clay Holmes in the nightcap, with is a makeup game from a rainout on June 20th.

Eric Thames left last night’s game with tightness in his left hamstring. The issue is not thought to be serious, but he could be rested for the remaining two games before the All-Star break.

Milwaukee reliever Jeremy Jeffress has been added to the National League All-Star roster. He’ll take the place of injured Washington Nationals closer Sean Doolittle.

Fast Pitch Softball
In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League play last night…
– Northern Michigan Land Brokers defeated Auto Pro Glass and Tire 7-3. Mel Baker was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Isabelle Cleary. Rayna Kalcich took the loss. Quinn Donnelly and Anna Gaffney each had three hits for NMLB, and Cassidy Becia had four hits, including a triple. Taylor Shepeard led Auto Pro with three hits, including a triple. The win moved NMLB into a second place tie with Auto Pro in the season standings.
– The game between Mattila Rock and Dock and Loading Zone II/Calumet Golf Club was canceled.

Twilight League
The annual Leo Durocher baseball tournament is underway. Last evening, Superior National Bank-Stanton defeated L’Anse 12-1. Today, the Finlandia University Alumni will meet REL-Mohawk Technologies at 9:00 at the Hancock Driving Park. Wolverine Orbit will play Tri-City Neganuee at 9:00 at the Stanton Field. Dean Kangas State Farm will face Channing at 10:45 at the Stanton field. See the full tournament bracket here.

The annual Run the Keweenaw Trail Running Festival will be held today and tomorrow in and around Copper Harbor. Events include the Mt. Baldy Summit Run this morning… the 10K Copper Harbor Trails Challenge, the 10K Copper Harbor Trails Non-Competitive Run/Hike, and the 2K Junior Trail Run this afternoon… and the 25K Carl Olson Memorial Adventure run tomorrow.
