Sayen Honored as MTU Cross Country Heads to NCAA Tourney – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

High school volleyball regional semifinals will be played tonight…
• In Division Three, Calumet faces Iron Mountain at Westwood. Coverage begins at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Charlevoix faces Elk Rapids in the other semifinal.
• In Division Four, Baraga takes on Ironwood at Ontonagon. Forest Park plays Superior Central in the other semifinal.

Facing an 850-mile round trip to play at Standish-Sterling in a Division Six state tournament regional championship game Saturday, the Calumet High School football team is appealing for financial support. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover expenses. You can donate here.

College Soccer

The fourth-seeded Michigan Tech soccer team faces fifth-seed Northern Michigan University in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament today. The game begins at 1:00 at Kearly Stadium. The teams split their games during the regular season, with the Huskies falling to the Wildcats 2-0 on Sunday.

College Cross Country

Michigan Tech runner Clayton Sayen has been named to the NCAA Division II All-Region Cross Country team. The former Houghton High School standout led the Huskies to a second-place finish in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this year, and placed first out of 374 runners at the Roy Griak Invitational. It’s Sayen’s second All-Region honor. The Tech team has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II cross country finals, which will be held November 20th at St. Leo University in Florida.

College Football

Michigan Tech’s Michael Bates, Jr. has been named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for football. Bates returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in Saturday’s victory over Northwood University.

College Hockey

The Finlandia men’s hockey team entertains Northwood College tonight at 7:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Edmonton Oilers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons return to action tomorrow, when they visit the Houston Rockets. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, Chris Boswell’s 40-yard field goal in the closing seconds lifted the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 29-27 victory over the Chicago Bears. The Bears had scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take a late lead, before the Steelers drove 52 yards to set up the winning kick.
