Seasons End for Gremlins, Jets Baseball; Bulldogs Softball – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In baseball…
• Houghton’s season ended with a 7-3 loss to Standish-Sterling in the Division Three regional championship game Saturday at Harbor Springs. It was the only loss the Gremlins suffered this season.
• Jeffers’ campaign concluded Saturday with a 6-4 loss to Johannesburg-Lewiston in the Division Four regional championship game.

In softball…
• Hancock fell to Pickford 12-1 in a regional semifinal game Saturday at Norway. The game was interrupted by a one-hour rain delay. The other semifinal and the championship game were rescheduled to today.

NHL

The Lightning advanced to the Stanley Cup finals with a 2-1 victory over the Rangers Saturday night. Steven Stamkos’ game-winning goal in the third period came just 21 seconds after New York had tied the game with a Frank Vatrano power play tally.

The Stanley Cup finals will open Wednesday in Denver, as the Avalanche host the Lightning.

NBA

The NBA championship between the Warriors and the Celtics is tied 2-2, and continues Monday in Oakland.

MLB

Beau Brieske earned his first major league win, as the Tigers shaded the Blue Jays 3-1 Saturday. Brieske pitched into the sixth, allowing seven hits, but no runs. Victor Reyes had three hits in his return from the injury list. He scored a run, and drove home another.

The Tigers host the Blue Jays again this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Ross Stripling. Coverage will begin at 1:20 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers’ losing streak reached eight game yesterday with an 8-6 loss to the Nationals. Christian Yelich led off the game with a home run, but Washington scored four off Eric Lauer in the third, and four more in the fifth. Mark Mathias and Luis Urías also homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers visit the Nationals again this afternoon. Jason Alexander will start against Paolo Espino.

Mathias was in the lineup after having been called up to fill in for Kolton Wong, who was added to the injury list with a right calf strain.

Fishing

Some excellent catches were turned in after a rainy day of fishing at the Keweenaw Bay Classic Fishing Tournament Saturday.

Perennial contenders Lyberg and Lyberg won the Lake Trout Division, with a catch of 50.71 pounds.

Meet You There took second in the Lake Trout Division. Their 49.33 pound catch was boosted by the day’s largest fish, a mammoth 38.15 pounder.

Hard Wired won the salmon division, with a catch of 38.13 pounds.

Rubber Duck claimed second place in the salmon division, with a 24.92 pound catch.

130 boats participated in the competition.
