Seasons End for Tech Women’s Hoops, Hockey – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey Saturday…
• Hancock concluded its regular season with a 7-1 victory over Negaunee. LeRoy Bastien had a hat trick. Austin Salani added two goals and an assist. Calvin Heinonen and Todd Anderson each had a goal and an assist. Cole Stuber had three assists. Daniel Wroblewski faced just six shots in net.

The hockey playoffs begin Tuesday. Calumet faces Jeffers at 5:30, and Houghton takes on Hancock at 8:00. Our coverage will begin around 5:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In boy basketball Saturday, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shut down Calumet 74-42. Davin Hill passed the 1,000 career point mark for the Blue Bolts.

The Houghton High School boys swim team took second place at the U.P. Championships Saturday. The girls team placed fifth. The Gremlins’ only individual event winner was Davin Evans, in the 200 individual medley. Evans also set a school record, while finishing second in the 100 breaststroke. See full results here.

Pairings for the high school basketball tournaments have been released.

In girls Division Four…
• Dollar Bay will face Chassell in the opening game of the District 98 tournament on Monday, March 22nd. On Wednesday, March 24th, the winner of that game will play Ontonagon, and Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Baraga.
• Ewen-Trout Creek is in District 97, and will face Watersmeet Wednesday, March 24th.

In girls Division Three…
• District 65 play will begin Monday, March 22nd, as Hancock faces Jeffers, and Negaunee plays Westwood. Those winners will meet on Wednesday, March 24th. Also on Monday, March 22nd, L’Anse will play Ishpeming. That winner will face Calumet on Wednesday, March 24th.

In girls Division Two…
• In District 33, on Monday, March 24th, Houghton will face Kingsford, and Gladstone will play Escanaba. The finals will be Wednesday.

In boys Division Four…
• In District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Baraga on Tuesday, March 23rd. The winner of that game will play Dollar Bay-Tamarack City on Thursday, March 25th, and Chassell will take on Republic-Michigamme.
• In District 97, Ontonagon and Wakefield-Marenisco will play on Tuesday, March 23rd. The winner will meet Ewen-Trout Creek on Thursday, March 25th.

In boys Division Three…
• In District 65, L’Anse faces Calumet on Tuesday, March 23rd. The winner will play Jeffers on Thursday, March 25th. Hancock will play Westwood on Tuesday, March 23rd. The winner of that game will meet the Ironwood-Ishpeming winner on Thursday, March 25th.

In boys Division Two…
• In District 33, Houghton will open against Gladstone on Tuesday, March 23rd. The winner will play Escanaba on Thursday, March 25th.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team ended its season with a 4-1 loss to Bemidji State in the quarterfinals of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament Saturday night. Tommy Parrottino gave the Huskies an early advantage, but the Beavers scored four straight, including two empty-netters, to claim the best-of-three series two games to none.

Northern Michigan University fell to 13th-ranked Bowling Green 5-0 Saturday. That series is tied 1-1, and continues tonight in Ohio.

The other quarterfinal series concluded Saturday, as Lake Superior State eliminated Alabama Huntsville 4-1, and top-seeded Minnesota State ousted Ferris State 3-1.

College Basketball

The season is over for the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team. The Huskies’ 18-game win streak, and its tournament hopes, ended with a 74-65 loss to Ashland in the NCAA Division II basketball regional semifinals Saturday. After taking an early lead, Tech went cold in the second quarter, and could not recover. Cassidy Trotter led the Huskies with 18 points. It was just the second loss of the season for MTU, which won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles.

At the men’s regional in Evansville, Indiana, Southern Indiana defeated Lewis 62-60 Saturday night. The Eagles will take on second seeded Michigan Tech tonight at 9:30.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team completed a weekend sweep of 25th-ranked Ferris State with a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon. Olivia Ghormley had 20 kills. Laura De Marchi contributed 61 assists.

The NMU volleyball team blanked Northwood 3-0 Saturday, also completing a weekend sweep.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes today. Coverage begins at 4:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The cold-shooting Detroit Pistons fell to the Brooklyn Nets 100-95 Saturday night. Over one stretch in the first half, Detroit missed 19-straight three-point attempts. Jerami Grant led the team with 22 points.

The Pistons host the San Antonio Spurs Monday. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Casey Mize struggled, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 9-3 in Grapefruit League play Saturday. Mize gave up a two-run homer and a grand slam before leaving in the third inning. Akil Baddoo homered for Detroit.

The Tigers play the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull is scheduled to start for Detroit.

In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers played to a 4-4 tie Saturday. Milwaukee starter Drew Rasmussen threw two scoreless innings, but left as Texas scored twice in the third. Garrett Mitchell and Daniel Robertson homered for the Crew. The game ended in the midst of a seventh-inning Brewers rally when Rangers pitcher Brett de Geus suffered a cramp, and the team had no additional pitchers left on their limited travel roster.

The Brewers will face the Seattle Mariners this afternoon. Adrian Houser is scheduled to start.

Great Bear Chase

At the Great Bear Chase Saturday at the Swedetown Trails…
• Marcus Grond of Marquette won the 50k Skiathlon, four minutes ahead of Houghton’s Skyler Patten. Mark Ousdigian of Houghton placed fourth. Caitlin Gregg was the fastest woman.
• Adam Witkowski of Victor, New York, dominated the 50k Classic, finishing 25 minutes ahead of the field. Pauline Forren of Marquette won the women’s title.
• Tres Gren of Houghton win the 50k Freestyle, with a 108-second margin over Peter Coenen of Duluth. Anna Engle of Rhinelander was the top woman.
• Mike Fraley of Houghton claimed the 25k Classic, finishing a minute better than Houghton’s Eric Weiss. Victoria Myers of Wausau took women’s honors.
• Pearl Harvey of Marquette won the 25k Freestyle, with Zaine Braaten of Moorhead, Minnesota the top men’s finisher.
• Birk Seagren of Houghton earned the title in the 10k Classic, finishing just three seconds ahead of Samuel Markey of Marquette. Houghton’s Ingrid Seagren placed third, and won the women’s division. Augustus Hamil of Houghton finished fourth.
• Cyrus Hamlin of Houghton win the 10k Freestyle, finishing nearly two minutes better than Chassell’s Illya Velat. Skyler Browning of Houghton placed third. Sage Resh Chimner of Houghton won the women’s title.
