Skubal Strong as Tigers Dump Giants – Tuesday Sports Wrap

MLB

Tarik Skubal turned in five strong innings, as the Tigers stopped the Giants 5-1 yesterday. Skubal allowed just two hits and struck out nine, and earned his first win since undergoing major surgery a year ago. Riley Greene had three hits, and Zack Short homered.

The Tigers host the Angels tonight. Eduardo Rodriguez will pitch against Griffin Canning. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit added some fresh arms to the bullpen in advance of last night’s game, bringing Zach Logue and Brendan White back up from Toledo. Alex Faedo, who turned in six scoreless innings in a spot start Sunday, was sent back down. Mason Englert was placed on the injured list with hip soreness.

Christian Yelich singled home Blake Perkins in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the Reds last evening. Rookie Sal Frelik hit his first major league home run. Colin Rea gave up two runs over six innings. Devin Williams claimed the win in relief.

The Brewers entertain the Reds again tonight. Corbin Burnes will start against Andrew Abbott.

Fast Pitch Softball

On the final night of regular-season play for the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League…
• JB’s and REL completed a game that had been suspended earlier because of rain, with JB’s earning a 15-7 victory.
• Superior National Bank and Tervo Agency ended their game in a 3-3 tie after 10 innings, when the game was called because of darkness. Alice Larson and Kim Aho each had two singles for SNB. For Tervo Agency, Mel Baker had a triple, and Alana Nolan and Heather Huffmaster each had three singles.

The Fast Pitch League playoffs begin tomorrow night, and conclude Saturday. We’ll broadcast the championship game Saturday afternoon on KBear 102.3.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last night…
• Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s v Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics, then v Amy J’s – no report.
• Downtowner Two outscored Superior Lube 14-10.
• McGann’s/Northern Auto v Koppers – no report.

NFL

The Lions hosted free agent quarterback Teddy Bridgewater yesterday, with an eye toward bringing the veteran in as a backup for Jared Goff. Nate Sudfeld is the current number-two quarterback. Detroit also drafted quarterback Hendon Hooker this spring, but he’s recovering from an ACL injury suffered last year at the University of Tennessee.

Defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson had to be carted off the field at Lions training camp yesterday after suffering a knee injury. Reports indicate there was no structural damage, and he’s considered day-to-day. Gardner-Johnson was signed as a free agent last spring.

• Calumet Electronics downed Houghton Building Supply 7-2.
