MLB
The Detroit Tigers pounded four home runs off Justin Verlander, and claimed a 6-3 victory over the Houston Astros yesterday. The former Tigers ace struck out a dozen batters over six innings, but also threw gopher balls to John Hicks, Jeimer Candelario, Niko Goodrum and Jim Adduci. Detroit starter Francisco Liriano left the game after three innings with back tightness. Drew VerHagen earned the win in relief.

Because of the All-Star break, the Tigers are off until Friday, when they open a home set against the Boston Red Sox.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 in 10 innings yesterday. The Brewers broke open a 2-2 tie when Brett Phillips stroked a bases-loaded triple in the top of the eighth inning. The Pirates came back, though, with a run of Jeremy Jeffress in the bottom of the eighth. Cory Knebel relieved Jeffress, and worked out of the eighth-inning jam, but surrendered two runs that tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Phillips’ RBI single in the top of the 10th put Milwaukee back on top, but Josh Bell’s double off Dan Jennings in the bottom of the 10th wom it for the Pirates.

The Brewers will resume play after the All-Star Break at home against the Dodgers on Friday.

The annual Home Run Derby will be staged tonight. Milwaukee’s Jesús Aguilar is the top seed.
