SNB, Tervo Advance in Fast Pitch Tourney – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Fast Pitch Softball

In the opening round of the Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League tournament last night.
• Superior National Bank got off to a fast start, then held off JB’s 7-6. Leah Kiilunen’s two-run homer in the first inning, Nikki Koski’s RBI double in the second, and a four-run burst in the third staked SNB to a 6-0 lead. Big hits by Clea Olanketto and Quinn Donnelly powered a five-run fourth inning that got JB’s back into it. SNB added the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the fourth. JB’s scored a final run in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Delaney Heinonen was the winning pitcher, with relief from Vera Peterson.
• Tervo Agency advanced with a 6-5 victory over Superior Service. Tervo grabbed an early lead with three runs in the top of the first, with hits by Heather Huffmaster and Jill Keskimaki. Superior responded with two in the bottom of the inning, with a double from Millie Loukas. Tervo added two more runs in the third, with hits from Danielle Thoune and Heather Huffmaster. Superior Service got one back in the bottom of the third, then tied the contest in the fourth. Mel Baker drove home Aubrey Zackal with the game-winner for Tervo in the top of the fifth. Baker earned the win in the circle.

Tervo Agency will play Crush/Diamond House/Baby E’s tonight at 6:30 at the Bone Yard. The winner of tonight’s contest will face Superior National Bank in the championship game Monday at 6:30 at the Bone Yard. We will broadcast the title game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added a new player. Hunter Ross is a goalkeeper from Dillsboro, Indiana, where he set the school record for single-season saves at South Dearborn High School.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings and defenseman Gustav Lindstrom have agreed to extend his contract by two years. The Wings did not extend a qualifying offer to Evgeny Svechnikov, who will now become an unrestricted free agent. Svechnikov was Detroit’s first-round pick in the 2015 draft, but his career was slowed because of injuries. The signing period for unrestricted NHL free agents opens tomorrow.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ losing streak reached four games last night, with a 6-5, 10-inning loss to the Minnesota Twins. Matt Manning gave up two runs over five innings, but tired in the sixth, as Minnesota scored three times off him and José Cisnero. After being shut out through the first five innings, Detroit scored on homers by Miguel Cabrera in the sixth and Eric Haase in the seventh, and tied the contest on a two-run shot by Robbie Grossman in the top of the ninth. Max Kepler’s two-out RBI single off Gregory Soto in the bottom of the 10th ended the game.

The Tigers visit the Twins again tonight. Tyler Alexander will start against Kenta Maeda. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Tigers have agreed to terms with their third-round pick from the recent MLB draft. The signing by pitcher Dylan Smith means Detroit has come to terms with all of the players they chose in the first 10 rounds.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and open a series at Pittsburgh tonight. Brett Anderson will pitch against Tyler Anderson.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers may be close to resolving their impasse with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Multiple reports indicate that a new deal would shorten the remaining term of the star quarterback’s contract from three years to two, with a review after the end of this season. Rodgers missed Green Bay’s mandatory mini camp earlier this summer, saying he wanted to play for another team. Packers veterans are scheduled to report to training camp today. It’s not clear if the deal will be done in time for Rodgers to be among them.
