MLB
Justin Verlander turned in eight vintage innings, as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-0 last night. Verlander gave up just one hit. Shane Greene allowed two hits in the ninth, but completed the shutout. Detroit took an early lead with three runs over the first two innings, but didn’t break the game open until they plated three in the seventh, and four in the eighth. Ian Kinsler homered, and drove in four runs. Nicholas Castellanos drove in five runs.

Those two teams conclude their series in Detroit this afternoon. Drew VerHagen will start against Gerrit Cole. Pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their fourth straight game, 4-0 to the Minnesota Twins. Brandon Woodruff suffered the tough loss, giving up just two runs while pitching into the sixth.

That set wraps up in Milwaukee this evening. Zach Davies will pitch against Dietrich Enns, who will be making his major league debut.

The Cubs also lost yesterday, and the Cardinals won, so Milwaukee is tied with St. Louis for second place in the National League Central Division, a game-and-a-half behind Chicago.

There are reports that the Brewers may be interested in obtaining Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler. Detroit has placed Kinsler on revocable waivers. That’s a necessary step toward trading a player after the July 31st deadline. Kinsler would need to approve the deal, since his contract lists Milwaukee among the teams to which he can veto a trade.

Twilight League
Dean Kangas-State Farm punched its ticket to the Twilight Baseball League finals with a 10-2 victory over Wolverine-Orbit last night. State Farm won the best-of-three semifinal series two games to none. Superior National Bank-Stanton is scheduled to face REL-Mohawk Technologies tonight at 6:30 at the Hancock Driving Park. Stanton won the opening game of that series Tuesday night.

We’ll broadcast the Twilight League championship series next week on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers open their exhibition season at home against the Philadelphia Eagles tonight.

The Packers have released veteran defensive tackle Letroy Guion. Guion is facing a drunk driving charge from June, and had earlier been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL performance enhancing substances policy.
