State: “High School Sports Possible This Fall” – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

High school sports events will be allowed in our area this fall – if there’s no increase in COVID-19 infections.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer unveiled the “MI Safe Schools Road Map” yesterday. As long as the Upper Peninsula remains in COVID-19 Recovery Stage Five, students will be able to attend class.

Athletic practices will be permitted, with strict rules for disinfecting and distancing.

Competitions can be staged, with audiences of no more than 50 people indoors, and 250 people at outdoor events.

Regular health screenings will be required. Weight rooms can be used with appropriate social distancing. Equipment must be disinfected before and after each use.

If our infection rate rises, and we slip back to Recovery Stage Four, more restrictions would apply, including the cancellation of indoor events. If we were to slip back to Phase Three or worse, athletic events would not be allowed at all. See the full plan here.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University baseball team has landed another new recruit. Brandon Larue is a pitcher from Crivitz, Wisconsin. He’s transferring in from Milwaukee Area Technical College. This year’s baseball recruitment class now includes 20 players.

CCHA

When the revitalized Central Collegiate Hockey Association begins play in the fall of 2021, all of its games will be streamed. Yesterday, the league announced an agreement with FloSports to provide coverage of all regular-season and post-season league contests to its paid subscribers.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers have signed their top pick in the recent amateur draft. Spencer Torkelson will get a record $8.4 million signing bonus, as the number-one overall selection. As expected, he has been added to the team’s 60-man roster for the upcoming shortened season.

Meanwhile, the worst-kept secret in baseball has been confirmed – there will be no minor league play this season. The official announcement yesterday said that most players will be paid.
