Strange Yelich Homer Powers Brewers’ Win – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers’ bats woke up last night, as they routed the Chicago White Sox 8-3. The highlight of the 13-hit attack was a freak inside-the-park home run by Christian Yelich. It started with a lazy fly ball to the left field corner. Eloy Jiménez met it just inside the foul line, but missed the catch. He then tumbled over the wall into the stands, and became caught in the protective netting. By the time he worked himself free, Yelich had rounded second base. Jedd Gyorko also homered. Josh Lindblom struck out seven over five innings to earn the win.

The Brewers host the Cincinnati Reds tonight. Eric Lauer will pitch against Trever Bauer.

After missing four games against Saint Louis because of a COVID-19 outbreak among the Cardinals, the Detroit Tigers return to the field tonight at Pittsburgh. Matthew Boyd will start against Chad Kuhl. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The four games from the canceled series against the Cardinals will be made up. Doubleheaders have been scheduled for August 13th in Detroit, and September 10th in Saint Louis.

The three-game series between the Cardinals and Brewers that was canceled will be made up by turning three upcoming single games into doubleheaders – September 14th, 16th and 25th.

The Tigers cut infielder Jordy Mercer yesterday, as teams were required to reduce their rosters from 30 to 28 players. Mercer is about to turn 34. He signed with Detroit as a free agent last season, and came back as a minor-league free agent this year. Mercer has chosen to become a free agent. Manager Ron Gardenhire said the decision was tough, but reflects the team’s increasing emphasis on providing opportunities for younger players. Dawel Lugo will assume the utility role. The other player cut was pitcher Anthony Castro, who has been assigned to Toledo.

The Brewers trimmed their roster by sending down third baseman Ryon Healy and pitcher J.P. Feyereisen.

Finlandia

No specific schedule has been released. Finlandia University is a member of the NCHA for both men’s and women’s hockey.

NFL

If you have tickets to the Green Bay Packers’ first two home games this season, don’t bother. Team officials have confirmed that the games against the Detroit Lions September 20th, and the Atlanta Falcons October 5th, will be played at an otherwise-empty Lambeau Field. Decisions about subsequent games will be made later.
