Sturos Leads MTU Hockey Past UA-H – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey, the Wisigan Cup Tournament opened Friday with losses for both the Michigan teams involved. Ashland edged Jeffers 5-4 in overtime. L’Anse fell to the Wisconsin Northwest Icemen 6-3. Today, L’Anse welcomes Ashland at noon, and Jeffers hosts Northwest at 1:30.

Calumet skates at Kingsford today.

In girls high school basketball Friday night…
– Houghton remained unbeaten with a 58-41 victory over Kingsford .

In boys high school hoops Friday night…
– Calumet stopped Houghton 43-30. Wyatt Loukus scored 23 for the Copper Kings.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 86-64. Jaden Janke had 35 points for the Blue Bolts, and Devin Schmitz added 21.
– Chassell dropped a 53-52 heartbreaker at Bessemer.
– Baraga fell to Republic-Michigamme 46-26.
– L’Anse lost at Ewen-Trout Creek 66-40. Jake Witt scored 27 for the Panthers, and grabbed 15 rebounds.

The North Central boys team set a new state record for most consecutive victories by burying Bark River-Harris 76-29 Friday. Their 66th consecutive win eclipsed the old mark set by Chassell in the 1950s.

Sturos

MTU
Reid Sturos scored twice, as the Michigan Tech hockey team defeated Alabama-Huntsville 5-2 Friday night. Gavin Gould added a goal and two assists, as the Huskies opened up an early lead. Both of the Chargers’ goals came in the third period. Angus Redmond made 15 saves, as Tech outshot UA-H 41-17. Those teams play again tonight in Huntsville.

Both Tech basketball teams host Ferris State today. The women’s contest starts at 1:00, and the men’s game at 3:00.

NMU
The NMU hockey team is off this weekend.

Both Wildcats basketball teams will entertain Grand Valley State today.

Rounds

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 6-0 at Northland College Friday night. Alec Rounds made 47 saves for the Lions. Those teams play again tonight at 7:00 at the Houghton County Arena. All the gate proceeds from tonight’s contest will be donated to the Pigs’n’Heat fund. All law enforcement officers and firefighters will be admitted free. The Pigs’n’Heat hockey game will be played next Saturday at the SDC.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 6-1 at Concordia-Wisconsin Friday night. Those teams play again this afternoon.

Geralds

The Finlandia men’s basketball team built an eight-point halftime lead, then held on to defeat Wisconsin-Superior 81-76 Friday night. Marcus Geralds led the Lions with 29 points and 18 rebounds.

Daavettila

The women’s team fell to the Yellowjackets 87-81. The Lions opened an early lead, but went cold in the second quarter, and trailed by 11 at the end of the third. Julia Daavettila scored 24 for the Finns. Kelsie Richards, Mikayla Hakala and Carli Daavettila each added 16. Both Finlandia hoops teams welcome St. Scholastica today. The women will begin at 2:00, and the men at 4:00.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Mosinee Papermakers 4-1 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight at Dee Stadium. Faceoff is at 6:00.

The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Marquette Mutineers 6-4 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play at Miami tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NHL
The NHL All-Star Game will be played tomorrow. The Detroit Red Wings return to action Tuesday at home against the New Jersey Devils. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The NFL Pro Bowl will be played tomorrow night. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
