Sturos, Markham Lead Kings and Gremlins to Hockey Regional Final – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In the regional semifinals of the high school hockey tournament last night…
• Camden Markham scored twice, as Houghton defeated Hancock 4-1. Mike Maillette and Landon Stevens also scored for the Gremlins. Stevens’ goal from a tight angle was originally waived off by the referees, but eventually was confirmed. Chad Nordstrom scored for the Bulldogs.
• Calumet blanked Jeffers 8-0, in a game that ended 72 seconds early because of the mercy rule. Paul Sturos scored four goals for the Copper Kings. Isaac Larson added two goals, and Ayden Williams and Cam Anderson each scored once. The Kings outshot the Jets 50-21.

Houghton and Calumet will face off Saturday at noon at the SDC. Coverage of the regional title game will begin at 11:40 on KBear 102.3.

In boys high school basketball last night…
• The West Iron County at Calumet game was called off.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Ironwood 55-48.

In girls play last night…
• Baraga downed Chassell 71-43. Reide Osterman scored 23 for the Vikings, who improve to 17-1 for the season. Makenna Hendrickson added 18, and Cori Jahfetson had 13. Paris Olson and Kylee Sohlden each scored 11 for the Panthers.
• Ontonagon got past Ewen-Trout Creek 47-39.

In girls hoops tonight…
• Houghton welcomes Ontonagon
• Calumet plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell, with varsity tip-off at 6:00.
• Hancock visits L’Anse.
• Jeffers tips off at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
• Chassell hosts Watersmeet in a make-up game from January 24th.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Houghton travels to Iron Mountain.
• Baraga journeys to Wakefield-Marenisco.
• The L’Anse game at Ewen-Trout Creek has been postponed to March 3rd.

In a girls-boys doubleheader tonight…
• Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Bessemer.

Five members of the Houghton High School swim and dive team have earned All-U.P. honors. Leah Komarzec was named to the girls All-U.P. team. Quinn Aho, Davin Evans, Ty Haataja and Connor Holombo earned places on the boys squad. See the full roster here.

After two postponements forced by bad weather, they’ll try again today to stage the U.P. high school ski championships at Mont Ripley.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams visit Ferris State tonight.

Both NMU teams play at Lake Superior State.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team opens the Coast to Coast Conference tournament this afternoon. The Lions will face the University of Mary Washington at 4:00 Eastern Time in Santa Cruz, California.

Finlandia freshman Rae’quan Funches has been named to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference men’s basketball second team.

Skiing

Michigan Tech’s Anabel Needham begins competition with Team USA today at the U23 World Ski Championships in Lygna, Norway. Needham will race in the 10K classic today, the skate sprint on Saturday, and possibly the U23 mixed relay on Sunday.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 last night. Filip Zadina and Robby Fabbri scored for Detroit. Thomas Greiss made 26 saves, and took the loss.

The Wings entertain the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

With little progress reported in negotiations for a new labor contract, representatives from team owners have told the players that regular season games will start to be canceled if a deal is not in place by Monday. Players will not be paid for missed regular-season games.
