Team CC
Team Copper Country used two convincing victories yesterday to advance to today’s national championship game in Green Bay. In the quarterfinals, the Yoopers outscored the Minnesota Moose 4-1. Team CC opened up a 2-0 first period lead, with goals from Joe Phillips and Teddy Randell. The Moose got one back in the second period, but Alex Nordstrom and Phillips scored in the third stanza to put the game away. Dawson Kero made 22 saves.

In last night’s semifinal, Team CC scored the first four goals of the game, then held on for a 6-3 win over the Sylvania North Stars. Joshua Vandenburg, Nick Murvich, Teddy Randell and Sam Erkkila all found the net before the North Stars got on the board midway through the second period. Daunte Fortner added an insurance score late in the second. Sylvania closed the gap with a pair of goals, but Randell’s late empty-netter sealed the win. Nick Voelker made 21 saves.

Team Copper Country will face the Wonderland Wizards from Bridgeport, Connecticut, in the championship match today at noon. Team CC defeated the Wizards 4-3 in a sudden death shootout in pool competition on Saturday. The Yoopers may be short-handed for this game. Alex Nordstrom is doubtful because of a lower body injury. Teddy Perrault drew a game misconduct penalty in last night’s game. His boarding call was being reviewed overnight, and he could be suspended. Our broadcast coverage will begin around 11:40 this morning on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Finlandia

MLB
Strong pitching by Mike Fiers helped the Detroit Tigers earn a 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox yesterday. In his first Detroit start, Fiers gave up just three hits over six innings. Four relievers combined to hold the Sox hitless over the final three frames. Shane Greene earned the save. The only run of the game came in the first, when Leonys Martín singled, stole second, took third base on a passed ball, and scored on a Miguel Cabrera sacrifice fly. Former Tiger Bruce Rondón struck out the final four Detroit batters of the game, after having been called up from the minors by the Sox.

The Tigers will open a series in Cleveland tonight. Francisco Liriano will start against Corey Kluber. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 3-0 to the Chicago Cubs yesterday. The Crew collected just three hits. Chase Anderson gave up two runs over six innings, and took the tough loss.

The Brewers face the Cardinals in Saint Louis tonight. Jhoulys Chacin will pitch against Miles Mikolas.

Milwaukee outfielder Christian Yelich has been placed on the 10-day disabled list. Yelich suffered a right oblique injury Wednesday. Reliever Taylor Williams has been called up from Colorado Springs. Reliever Adrian Houser was sent down, leaving an open roster spot that will be filled today.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost a 130-117 shootout to the Memphis Grizzlies yesterday. Detroit set a franchise record with 23 three-pointers, but coach Stan Gundy called their defense “horrendous” against a Memphis team that was missing several key players. The Pistons play their final home game of the season tonight against the Toronto Raptors. Detroit will close the season Wednesday at Chicago.
