Team CC
Team Copper Country dominated state tournament play in Marquette over the weekend. After sweeping its three pool games Friday and Saturday by a combined score of 29-2, Team CC dispatched the Oakland Junior Grizzlies 4-1 in the semifinals yesterday morning. After a scoreless first period against the Michigan Ice Hawks in the title game, they erupted for five second-period goals to win the championship match 5-0.  Team Copper Country will defend its national title in Green Bay next month. We’ll broadcast their tournament games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team will face Notre Dame in the opening round of the NCAA hockey tournament. The Huskies are seeded fourth in the East Region. The game will be played Friday afternoon at 3:00 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It will be televised by ESPN 2. Tech earned a berth in the tournament by blanking Northern Michigan University 2-0 Saturday night in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament championship game.

High School
The undefeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys team will face Cedarville in the Class D quarterfinals tomorrow night at 7:00 at Escanaba. Students will be released from classes at noon tomorrow, so they’ll have time to travel to the game. A GoFundMe page has been set up for donations to help cover the team’s expenses. You can link to it here.

NCAA Women
Former Calumet High School and Keweenaw Storm standout Chelsea Jacques fell short in her bid for an NCAA women’s hockey championship yesterday. Jacques is a member of the Colgate University team, which lost 2-1 in overtime to Clarkston in the title match. There was another Copper Country connection to that game, as well. Former L’Anse athlete Sarah Hood Fraser presented the championship trophy. Fraser is the deputy director of athletics at Quinnipiac University, and is also the NCAA women’s hockey commissioner.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings’ winless streak reached 10 games, with a 5-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche yesterday. Jared Coreau took the loss in net. The Wings will host the Philadelphia Flyers tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will play the Kings in Sacramento tonight. Pregame coverage starts at 9:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers dropped a 10-5 decision to the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday. Prospect Artie Lewicki started the game, and gave up four runs over three innings. Niko Goodrum homered. The Tigers will face the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon.

The Tigers say starting pitcher Mike Fiers’ struggles this spring have been caused by back stiffness. Doctors say there’s nothing serious, but only time will tell if he’ll be ready for the start of the season.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-3 yesterday. The Brewers have today off, and take on the Colorado Rockies tomorrow.
