Tech Hockey Advances to CCHA Semifinals – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Four Houghton High School hockey players have been named to the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association All-State First Team.

Forwards Conner Arko and Mike Maillette, defenseman Connor Raffaelli and goaltender Bryant Lee were placed on the top squad. Gremlins coach Micah Stipech was named Division Three Coach of the Year. Nash Riipi, Kyle Moyer and Todd Kilpela from Marquette were also placed on the First Team, along with Cam Labadie from Sault Ste. Marie.

Second Team members include forward Jace Deforge and defenseman Noah Kreipke from Houghton, and Nick Wood from Sault Ste. Marie. Honorable Mention votes went to Cam Anderson and Ted Loukus of Calumet, Graham Johnson and Nolan Bink of Escanaba, Evan Kennedy, Cale Bell and Garrett Gorsuch of Sault Ste. Marie, and Cole Kelly and Brody Sheldon of Marquette. Hancock’s Tevin Stukel was named to the All-Freshman Team, along with Seth Sandstrom from Marquette.

At the state championships Saturday…
• In Division Three, Cranbrook Kingswood edged East Grand Rapids 3-2 in overtime.
• In Division Two, Byron Center thumped Trenton 6-1.
• In Division One, Detroit Catholic Central blanked Brighton 2-0.

In girls regional semifinal basketball games Monday…
• In Division Four, Lake Linden-Hubbell will take on Ewen-Trout Creek at 7:00 at Houghton High School. Ishpeming and Carney-Nadeau will play in the other regional semifinal at 6:00 at Kingsford High School.
• In Division Three, West Iron County will face Harbor Springs at 6:00 at Escanaba High School. Elk Rapids and Roscommon will meet in the other regional semifinal.
• In Division Two, Negaunee will play Petoskey at 7:00 at Manistique High School. Ludington and Clare will play in the other semifinal.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech advanced to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association semifinals by outscoring Bowling Green 6-5 Saturday. In a seesaw battle, the Falcons grabbed an early 2-0 advantage. Goals by Blais Richartz, Isaac Gordon and Ryland Mosely pushed the Huskies into the lead. Bowling Green reclaimed the lead with two goals midway through the second period. Tallies by Tyrone Bronte and Jack Works put Tech back on top. The Falcons tied the game early in the third period, but Mosely’s second goal of the game with 63 seconds remaining gave the Huskies the victory.

Northern Michigan’s season ended with a 6-1 loss at Minnesota State.

In other CCHA playoff series, Bemidji State eliminated Ferris State 4-0. Lake Superior State fell to St. Thomas 4-2 to tie that series at one win per team. That set will be decided with a third game tonight. Seeding for the semifinals will be set after tonight’s contest.

College Basketball

In Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournament semifinals Saturday…
• The women’s team advanced with a 63-56 victory over Ferris State. Jacy Weisbrod scored 16 points, and Sarah Newcomer added 15. The Wildcats will take on top-seed Grand Valley at 3:00 this afternoon in Allendale. The Lakers eliminated Parkside 72-59.
• The Northern men’s team lost to Grand Valley 92-77. Max Weisbrod scored 24 points. The fourth-seeded Lakers will meet third-seed Ferris State for the title this afternoon at 2:00 in Marquette. The Bulldogs ousted Wayne State 91-81.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines fell 5-3 to the Eagle River Falcons Saturday.

The Portage Lake Pioneers outskated the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 6-3 Saturday.

NHL

The Red Wings suffered their fifth straight loss Saturday night, 5-3 to the Golden Knights. Michael Rasmussen, J.T. Compher and Shayne Gostisbehere scored for Detroit. James Reimer stopped 31 shots, but took the loss in net.

The Wings visit the Sabres Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons were overwhelmed by the Mavericks 142-124 Saturday night. Cade Cunningham had 33 points and 10 assists. James Wiseman scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Pistons host the Hornets Monday, with coverage at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers outscored the Pirates 8-5 in Grapefruit League play Saturday. Keston Hiura and prospect Andrew Navigato homered. Starter Matt Manning allowed four runs over three innings.

The Tigers will play the Mets today. Brant Hurter will start.

Half of the Brewers will lost to the Mariners 7-6 Saturday. Freddy Peralta was torched for five runs on seven hits before being chased in the third inning. Prospect Juan Baez homered. The other half of the Crew fell to half of the Athletics 4-2. Evan McKendry allowed three runs over three innings.

The Brewers play the Rockies today. Jakob Junis will start.
