Tech Hockey Falls in Shootout – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Calumet High School volleyball standout Helen Beiring will join the team at Northern Michigan University next year. Beiring recently passed the 1,000 career kills mark for the Copper Kings. She set a new school record with 40 kills in one match in Calumet’s five-set victory over Elk Rapids in the state tournament regional finals Thursday.

• Iron Mountain hosts Evart this afternoon in a Division Eight regional tilt.
• Munising entertains Merrill today in an Eight Player Division One semifinal.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team ended its season with a very tight 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-27, 24-26) loss to top seed Ferris State in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament yesterday. Northern Michigan lost to Grand Valley 3-2 in the other semifinal. The Bulldogs and Lakers will play for the title today.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team opened its season with a 63-32 victory over William Jewell College at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Challenge in Liberty, Missouri, yesterday. Isabella Lenz led a balanced Huskies attack with 12 points. Tech will face Lewis University this afternoon.

The Northern women’s team earned a 77-59 victory over Lewis last night, and will face William Jewell today.

The men’s GLIAC/GLVC Crossover is being played at the SDC this weekend. Tech will face Lewis today at 2:00, and McKendree University tomorrow at 2:00. Northern will play McKendree today at noon, and Lewis tomorrow at noon.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team began its season with an 84-76 victory over Beloit College last night. Ilrick Higgins-Moise paced the Lions with 25 points. Finlandia travels to Northland College tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s team hosts Northland College today at 1:00. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team concludes its season today at Saginaw Valley State.

Northern wraps up its campaign at Lake Erie College today.

College Hockey

The Tech hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against Lake Superior State last evening. The Lakers claimed the extra Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings point in a shootout. Ryland Mosley got credit for the Huskies’ first goal, after his shot was accidentally redirected into the net by a Lakers’ defender. Jed Pietila scored his first collegiate goal. Blake Pietila made 19 saves, as Tech outshot LSSU 42-21. Those teams skate again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Northern Michigan blanked Bemidji State 2-0 last night. Those teams skate in Bemidji again this evening.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 5-1 at Aurora University last night. Those teams skate again today in Illinois.

The Finlandia women’s team dropped a 10-0 decision to Aurora last night. Those teams meet again today at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers lost 6-5 in overtime to the Mosinee Papermakers last night. The Pioneers visit the Fond du Lac Bears tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Kings tonight. Coverage will begin at 10:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons lost to the Knicks 121-112 last night. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 25 points. Cade Cunningham missed the game because of a sore shin.

The Pistons host the Celtics tonight. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
