Tech Hockey Falls to NMU in CCHA Semis – Sunday Sports Wrap

College Hockey

Michigan Tech fell 4-0 to Northern Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association semifinals Saturday night. The Wildcats got off to a quick start, with three goals against Blake Pietila in the first period. A late empty-netter sealed the win.

Northern will play in the CCHA championship game at Minnesota State next Saturday night. The Mavericks eliminated Ferris State 7-2.

College Basketball

The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team opened the NCAA playoffs with an 86-81 victory over Hillsdale Saturday night. The fifth-seeded Wildcats will face eighth-seed McKendree this evening. The Bearcats upended top-seed University of Indianapolis 77-63 Saturday. The Midwest Regional is being hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

Second-seed Missouri-St. Louis will play sixth-seed Ferris State in the other regional semifinal. The Bulldogs edged third-seed Ashland 71-70 Saturday.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost 5-4 in overtime to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs Saturday night.

The Portage Lake Pioneers had the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Bruins 3-2 Saturday afternoon in Boston. Andrew Copp and Alex Chaisson scored for Detroit in the first period. Magnus Hellberg made 35 saves.

Those two teams meet again this afternoon, in Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons lost a 121-115 decision to the Pacers Saturday night in Indianapolis. Seven Detroit players reached double figures, led by Isaiah Livers with 18 points.

The Pistons have now lost 11 straight, and will face the Pacers tomorrow evening, in Detroit. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers outslugged the Braves 16-7 Saturday. Parker Meadows hit two home runs. Starter Matt Manning struggled, giving up five runs over three innings.

The Tigers face the Twins this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start for Detroit.

The Brewers lost to the Royals 12-2. Eric Lauer pitched into the third, and gave up five runs.

Milwaukee faces the Cubs today. Janson Junk will start for the Brewers.

Nordic Skiing

At the annual UP Health System Great Bear Chase Saturday at the Swedetown Trails…
• Brian Gregg of Minneapolis won the 50k skiathlon, 12 seconds ahead of Hendrik Peterson of Marquette. Lauren McCollor of Plymouth, Minnesota was the fastest woman.
• Evan Wetzel of Madison took the title in the 50k classic, with a margin of more than 13 minutes over Mikael Kilpela of Marquette. Carli Goddard of Ely, Minnesota was the women’s champion.
• Nikolai Anikin of Duluth claimed the crown in the 50k freestyle, three minutes ahead of the fastest women’s finisher, Caitlin Gregg of Minneapolis.
• Christian Byar of Marquette took top honors in the 25k classic, with Peter Scheller of Champlin, Minnesota four-and-a-half minutes off the pace. Abby Scheller of Champlin was the top women’s finisher.
• Tom Wood of Houghton won the 25k freestyle, 32 seconds ahead of Pearl Harvey of Marquette, who was the top women’s finisher.
• Grant Frederickson of Hancock won the 10k classic, finishing 11 seconds ahead of Ingrid Seagren of Houghton, who took the women’s crown.
• Ingrid Halverson of Wayzata, Minnesota claimed the 10k freestyle, 65 seconds ahead of Wells Huotari of Independence, Minnesota, who was the top men’s finisher.
