Tech Hockey Falls, Will Open Playoffs at NMU – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Ewen-Trout Creek swept the top honors in the All-Copper Mountain Conference girls high school basketball team.

Elise Besonen of the Panthers was named Most Valuable Player. Paige Berglund was named Best Defensive Player, and Jacky Besonen was honored as Coach of the Year.

Elite team members include Paige Sleeman from Chassell, Maija Ricce from L’Anse, Rylie Koskinen from Baraga, Makenna Votila from Ontonagon, and Carlee Yon from Wakefield-Marenisco.

Members of the Copper Country Division First Team include Sleeman, Brenna Hill and Miranda Heinonen from Jeffers, and Koskinen, Jaylene Lindeman and Allison Durant from Baraga.

Members of the Porcupine Mountains Division First Team include Besonen, Bergland, Rice, Votila, Yon, and Kailyn Voskuhl from L’Anse,

In high school basketball Saturday morning, the Copper Country Christian School girls lost to the Northern Stars 29-28 in double overtime. Sierra Jackson had 17 points. The boys defeated the Northern Stars 49-39. Noah Bach led all scorers with 26 points. On Saturday afternoon, the girls fell to the Riverside Eagles, 47-23. Jackson had 12 points. The boys lost to the Eagles 53-40. Bach had 13 points and Ben Bishop scored 12.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team ended its regular season with a 3-2 loss to Northern Michigan University Saturday night. Darien Craighead’s goal with 63 seconds remaining was the game-winner. Brenden Datema and Tommy Parrottino scored for the Huskies. Datema’s goal was his first for Tech. Matt Jurusik made 26 saves.

The two rivals will meet again. The Wildcats are seeded third in the WCHA playoffs, and will host the sixth-seeded Huskies in a best-of-three series next weekend.

Minnesota State claimed the MacNaughton Cup as the regular-season WCHA champion.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team advanced to the championship game of the ACAA tournament by defeating Pine Manor 78-62 Saturday night. Carsyn Osterman recorded the fourth triple-double in program history, with 11 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists. Bailey Froberg led the Lions with 17 points.

The second-seeded Lions will face top-seeded UC-Santa Cruz for the championship today. The pregame show will begin around 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia softball team begins its southern schedule today, with games against Clark College and Kenyon College.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Ottawa Senators Saturday night. Frans Nielsen and Dylan Larkin scored early for Detroit. Newly-acquired Sam Gagner’s goal in the third period forced overtime. Jonathan Bernier stopped 36 shots.

The Wings host the Colorado Avalanche tomorrow. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Sacramento Kings today. Coverage begins at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In spring baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost 8-2 to half of the New York Yankees Saturday. Starter Matthew Boyd threw three scoreless innings.

The Tigers face all of the Yankees this afternoon.

Freddy Peralta tossed three scoreless innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Chicago Cubs 4-3 Saturday. Orlando Arcia hit his third homer of the spring, and Logan Morrison also knocked one out.

The Brewers play the Cincinnati Reds today.

CopperDog 150

Joanna Oberg holds the lead after two stages of the CopperDog 150 Dogsled Race. Oberg turned in the fastest time in stage two from Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor Saturday, finishing three minutes faster than Ryan Anderson. Oberg’s overall lead over Anderson is three-and-a-half minutes, heading into the final leg from Copper Harbor to Calumet this morning. Defending champion Martha Schouweiler is six-and-a-half minutes off the pace.

First-round leader Michael Bestgen struggled Saturday, and fell to sixth place overall.

Among local mushers, Tom Bauer is eighth, Christian Stevens is 11th, and Chad Grentz is 12th.

Calumet’s Jerry Trudell leads the CopperDog 80, heading into the final stage this morning. The defending champion has a three-minute advantage over Alex LaPlante. Andrea DeBoer is another 16 seconds back, in third place. Among local mushers, Becky Bean is 11th. From the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech, Colie Fleming is sixth, and Ty Longstreet is eighth.

Mushers will begin leaving Copper Harbor at 8:30, and typically start arriving at the finish line in Calumet shortly after noon.
