Tech Hockey Opens NCAA Tourney This Afternoon – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

The Ewen-Trout Creek boys basketball team will face Lake Leelanau Saint Mary in the Division Four state semifinals today at 5:30 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. The Panthers bring a record of 22-3 into the game. The Eagles are 21-4. Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian will play Genesee Christian in the other Division Four semifinal tonight at 7:30.

The other U.P. team in the state semifinals, Menominee, will face Ecorse in a Division Three match today at noon. Schoolcraft takes on Flint Beecher at 2:00 in the other semifinal.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team opens the NCAA tournament this afternoon. The Huskies are seeded 12th, with a record of 21-12-3. They will face fifth seed Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs have a record of 21-15-4. They upset Saint Cloud State, Denver and Western Michigan to win the National Collegiate Hockey Conference tournament. Faceoff is at 3:00 in Loveland, Colorado. Fourth seed Denver will play 13th seed Massachusetts-Lowell in the other regional semifinal this evening.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team is scheduled to play two at North Central University in Minneapolis this afternoon.

The Finlandia University baseball team has introduced a new recruit for next season. Cobi Woodfin is an outfielder from San Angelo, Texas.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the New York Islanders tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons brought down the Atlanta Hawks 122-101 last night. Eight Pistons reached double figures in scoring, led by Jerami Grant with 21 points.

The Pistons entertain the Washington Wizards tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates played to a 6-6 tie yesterday. Eduardo Rodriguez gave up a solo home run in the first inning, then pitched through the fourth with no further damage. Derek Hill homered for Detroit, and Ryan Kreidler blasted a grand slam.

The Tigers will face the New York Yankees this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Cincinnati Reds 12-8 last night. Starter Corbin Burnes struggled, giving up five runs over three innings. J.C Mejia and Brad Boxburger were also hit hard. Tyrone Taylor and Keston Hiura homered.

The Brewers will play the Arizona Diamondbacks this afternoon.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers have signed veteran free agent defensive lineman Jarran Reed. Reed spent five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, before spending last year with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Adaptive Hockey

Houghton High School senior Maria Velat is organizing an adaptive hockey clinic and game Saturday. It starts at 1:00 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena, and is free and open to the public. All are invited to find out how hockey works for those with disabilities. There will be prizes for the first 50 people who arrive.
