High School

The high school softball season opens unofficially this weekend, with the Spring Swing exhibition event at the Superior Dome.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team faces top-ranked Boston College in the opening round of the NCAA hockey tournament this afternoon. Face-off is at 2:00. The Huskies carry a record of 19-14-6 into the game. The Eagles are 35-5-1. The game will be played in Providence, Rhode Island, and will be televised on ESPN U. Wisconsin and Quinnipiac will meet in the other regional semifinal.

Michigan State will face Western Michigan in an opening-round match today at 5:00. The University of Michigan will take on North Dakota tonight at 8:30. Both of those games will be played in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

Other regional semifinals were played last evening. Cornell and Denver won their games, and will play for a regional title tomorrow. Boston University and Minnesota took their contests, and will play for a regional title tomorrow.

The University of Michigan has launched a study to gauge the feasibility of establishing the first Division I varsity women’s hockey program in the state. At this time, only Adrian College offers an NCAA women’s program, at the Division III level. Five of the nation’s eight NAIA women’s hockey programs are sited in Michigan.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers will host the Top Shelf team from Chicago tomorrow at 5:00 at Dee Stadium.

The Calumet Wolverines entertain the Marquette Mutineers tomorrow at 6:00 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings lost to the Hurricanes 4-0 last night. James Reimer stopped 29 of 33 shots in net, and took the loss. The win clinched a playoff berth for Carolina. With nine regular-season games remaining, Detroit remains two standings points behind the Capitals in the race for the final wild card playoff berth.

The Wings visit the Panthers tomorrow afternoon. 

NBA

The Pistons visit the Wizards today, with coverage at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers eked out a 1-0 victory in their season-opener against the White Sox yesterday. Andy Ibáñez drove home Javier Báez with the game’s only run on a sacrifice fly. Tarik Skubal scattered three hits over six innings, and struck out six. Shelby Miller, Andrew Chafin and Jason Foley allowed no hits over the final three frames.

The Tigers play in Chicago again tomorrow. Kenta Maeda will face Michael Soroka. 

The Brewers and Mets were rained out in their opener yesterday. That game will be made up this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start against José Quintana.

Milwaukee has designated former Tiger Eric Haase for assignment. Haase batted .395 and belted five home runs during spring training, but couldn’t displace William Contreras and Gary Sánchez on the roster.
