Tech Hockey Swept by Tommies – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
• Houghton cruised past U of D Jesuit 5-1. Teegan Tapani scored in the first period. Cooper Leonard, Connor Arko and Noah Maillette broke the game open with second-period tallies, and Noah Maillette’s second goal late in the contest sealed the win. Bryant Lee made 16 saves, as the Gremlins improve to 16-0.
• Calumet couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to Brother Rice 7-4. Cam Anderson scored the only goal of the first period. Brendan Boberg added two early in the second period, before the Warriors broke loose with seven straight tallies to take command. Anderson’s second goal of the night with 82 seconds left in the game rounded out the scoring for the Copper Kings. Listen to the game replay here.
• The Jeffers trip to the Merrill Tournament was canceled because of the storm.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team built an early lead, and dispatched Lake Superior State 75-58 Saturday. Katelyn Meister led the Huskies with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tech men’s team fell behind early, and lost to the Lakers 78-55. Marcus Tomashek scored 16 for the Huskies.

The Northern Michigan women’s team scored just nine points in the second quarter, and fell 79-67 to 11th-ranked Ferris State Saturday. Sarah Newcomer paced the Wildcats with 18 points.

The NMU men’s team scored the final eight points of the game, and upended the 12-ranked Bulldogs 75-71. Max Weisbrod scored 18, as the Wildcats won their ninth straight.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision at Saint Thomas Saturday night. Kyle Kukkonen scored the Huskies’ only goal. Blake Pietila made 18 saves, and took the loss in net.

Northern Michigan lost to Lake Superior State 5-2. The Lakers win the Cappo Cup, with a 17-13 goals advantage in the four-game series.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines’ game at Mosinee Saturday night was postponed because of the storm. No make-up date has been announced.

The Portage Lake Pioneers had the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings erupted for four second-period goals, and outskated the Kings 5-3 Saturday night. Dylan Larkin scored twice, and Robby Fabbri, Andrew Copp and Patrick Kane also found the net. Alex Lyon made 33 saves.

The Wings visit the Maple Leafs tonight.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Wizards for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day matinee on Monday.

NFL

The NFL playoffs began Saturday…
• The Texans returned two intercepted Joe Flacco passes for touchdowns, and routed the Browns 45-14.
• The Chiefs shut down the Dolphins 26-7 in a game that was deemed the fourth-coldest in NFL history.

Today…
• The Bills’ game against the Steelers that was scheduled for 1:00 has been postponed until Monday because of bad weather in Buffalo.
• The Packers visit the Cowboys for a 4:30 contest.
• The Lions entertain Matthew Stafford and the Rams in an 8:00 game.

Monday…
• The Bills host the Steelers in a 4:30 contest.
• The Eagles visit the Buccaneers for an 8:15 game.
