Tech Hockey Swept at Ferris – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey yesterday…
– Jeffers lost at Ashland 3-1.
– Hancock trounced Escanaba 9-3.
– Calumet and Kingsford skated to a 5-5 tie.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team fell 7-1 at Adrian College yesterday. Garrett Nichol scored the Lions only goal. Daniel Spencer made 48 saves in net, as the Lions were outshot 55-27.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team gave up two goals in the final minute, and dropped a 4-2 heartbreaker at Concordia-Wisconsin yesterday. Tallies by Kait Ryynanen and Bella Abear had brought the Lions back from an early 2-0 deficit. Sarah Gundry stopped 34 shots, and took the loss in her first appearance in goal this season for Finlandia.

A late comeback by the Finlandia women’s basketball team fell short, as they lost 60-55 at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul yesterday. Trailing by 10 with eight minutes to go, the Lions closed the gap to just one point over the next three minutes, but couldn’t complete the effort. Julie Daavettila had 24 points and nine rebounds. Kelsie Richards added 14 points, and grabbed 15 rebounds.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 87-50 at the University of Northwestern yesterday. Northwestern broke the game open midway through the first half, and the Lions were unable to challenge after that. Geoff Smart led Finlandia with 11 points. The Lions visit Martin Luther College today.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss at Ferris State last night. The Bulldogs scored all three of their goals in the second period. The Huskies’ only score came off the stick of Alex Smith in the third. Patrick Munson stopped 21 shots, and took the loss in goal.

The NMU hockey squad completed a sweep at Alaska-Anchorage with a 5-3 victory last night. The win increased the Wildcats’ lead in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association to three points over Bowling Green, and four points over Minnesota State.

Both Tech basketball teams will entertain Northern Michigan University this afternoon. The women’s game will start at 1:00, and the men’s contest at 3:00.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to 7-4 to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs last night.

The Calumet Wolverines had the weekend off.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost their seventh straight game, falling 121-108 to the Oklahoma City Thunder yesterday. The Thunder used a 15-0 run early in the second half to open up a 27-point lead, and the Pistons never threatened down the stretch. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 21 points. The Pistons visit the Cleveland Cavaliers this evening. We’ll join the game after the NFL Pro Bowl on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings are off for the all-star break. They’ll return to action Wednesday at home against the San Jose Sharks. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
