Tech Hockey Wins Desert Classic – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
 • Houghton pounded Novi 91. Camden Markham and Landon Stevens each had two goals and three assists. Mike Maillette had two goals and one assist. Gab Carlson had one goal and four assists. Sully Rajala had a goal and three assists, and Jack Sayen scored a goal. The Gremlins outshot the Wildcats 50-10, and improve their record to 14-0.
 • Calumet fell to Brighton 10-2.
 • Hancock downed Northville 5-3.
 • Jeffers outskated Ashland 8-3.

College Hockey

The 16th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team claimed the title at the Desert Classic in Tempe yesterday, with a 3-2 victory over sixth-ranked Boston University in the title game. The Huskies built an early 3-0 lead, with first period goals from Logan Pietila, Kyle Kukkonen and Tristan Ashbrook. Blake Pietila stopped 31 shots, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

The Northern Michigan hockey team lost 5-3 to 19th-ranked Minnesota State Saturday. 

The Finlandia men’s hockey team fell to Trine University 5-0 Saturday. The Thunder outshot the Lions 37-13.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost to Wisconsin-Superior 7-0 Saturday evening. The Yellowjackets outshot the Lions 60-12. Those teams skate again today at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team built an early lead, then held off Wayne State 86-71 Saturday. Isabella Lenz led the Huskies with 18 points.

The Tech men’s team fell to Wayne State 72-65 in overtime. The Warriors sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to force the extra period. Marcus Tomashek scored 17 for the Huskies.

Both Northern Michigan teams earned narrow victories at Saginaw Valley State Saturday – the women 56-52, and the men 71-68.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost 9-7 to the Falcons Saturday.

Nordic Skiing

The U.S. Cross Country Ski National Championships wrapped with a SuperTour freestyle sprint Saturday. Northern Michigan’s Kristoffer Alm Karsrud won the men’s title. Michigan Tech’s Adam Witkowski finished eighth. Hailey Swirbul from the APU Nordic Ski Center continued her dominance with a victory in the women’s event. Wes Campbell from Michigan Tech placed fifth in the junior men’s competition. See full results here.

NBA

The Pistons host the 76ers this afternoon.

NHL

The Red Wings lost to the Maple Leafs 4-1 Saturday night. Jake Walman scored Detroit’s only goal. Magnus Hellberg made 25 saves, and took the loss in net.

NFL

In the NFL Saturday…
• The Chiefs dominated the Raiders 31-13.
• The Jaguars came from behind to defeat the Titans 20-16.

The regular NFL season wraps up today. The Lions visit the Packers for the Sunday night game. The Packers can clinch the final NFC wildcard playoff berth with a victory. The Lions can clinch that berth with a victory tonight, and a loss by the Seahawks. The Seahawks can clinch the playoff spot with a victory over the Rams this afternoon, and a win by the Lions tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers have traded reliever Gregory Soto and utility player Kody Clemens to the Phillies. In exchange, Detroit gets three young players – infielder Nick Maton, outfielder Matt Vierling and catcher Donny Sands. Maton can play second, shortstop, third base and in the outfield. In 86 games with Philadelphia over the past two years, he hit .254 with seven home runs. Vierling has great speed. Over the past two seasons, he played in 151 games, batted .260 and hit eight home runs. Sands is ranked as the Phillies’ number-21 prospect. At Triple-A last season, he played in 60 games, and batted .308 with six home runs.

Soto saved 30 games for Detroit last season, and was named to the All-Star team. With Joe Jiménez already traded to the Braves, the Tigers’ closing job is up for grabs.

The Brewers have traded right-handed pitcher Justin Topa to the Seattle Mariners, in exchange for right-hander Joseph Hernandez.
