Tech Hockey Wins Final Winter Carnival Game – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In girls basketball Saturday…
• Houghton earned a 20-point victory at West Iron County. The final score was not reported.

The Copper Country Christian School girls basketball team swept its games against the Delta County Knights Saturday, 30-25 and 20-17. Lynea Jackson scored 27 points for the Warriors, and Gabby O’Connor added 11.

The Warriors boys teams lost both of their contests, falling 60-25 and 66-28.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team earned a Winter Carnival split with Bowling Green by taking a 4-2 victory Saturday. After scoring both of the Huskies’ goals Friday, Kyle Kukkonen added two more tallies Saturday, and was named the Winter Carnival MVP. Ryland Mosely and Tristan Ashbrook also scored. Blake Pietila made 21 saves.

The Northern Michigan hockey team lost at St. Thomas 4-2 Saturday.

The Finlandia University men’s team skated to a 4-4 tie against Concordia-Wisconsin Saturday. Matteo Ybarra, Max Messier, Nate Holm and Brendan Erickson scored for the Lions. Dakota Meyer made 22 saves. The Falcons won the extra Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings point in a shootout. The Lions conclude their season in last place in the NCHA, with an overall record of 4-18-2.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team hosts Marian University tonight at 7:00, and tomorrow afternoon at 4:00.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech basketball teams split their games at Davenport University Saturday…
• The women got off to a quick start, and claimed a 63-48 win. Ellie Mackay scored 18 points for the 24th-ranked Huskies.
• The men fell 77-71. Adam Hobson had 17 points for Tech.

Both Northern teams fell at Grand Valley Saturday – the women 64-52, and the men 81-75.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 107-83 to Kent State-Tuscarawas Saturday.

The Finlandia women’s team concluded its regular season by pounding Maranatha Baptist 102-42 Saturday evening. Natalie Bartle scored 35 for the Lions. Finlandia will take part in the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference tournament in Fredericksburg, Virginia, beginning February 23rd.

NHL

Dylan Larkin and Jonatan Berggren each scored twice, as the Red Wings downed the Canucks 5-2 Saturday afternoon. Filip Hronek also found the net, and Ville Husso made 32 saves.

The Wings visit the Canucks tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Raptors this afternoon.

NFL

The Eagles and Chiefs meet in the Super Bowl tonight. Coverage will begin at 3:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Former Tigers reliever Andrew Chafin has signed a one-year contract with the Diamondbacks.

Nordic Skiing

The annual Barneløpet will be held today, featuring Nordic ski races for children ages 3 through 17 at the Maasto Hiihto Trails. Registration begins at 1:00 in the chalet in Hancock. Races start at 2:00. There is no entry fee. For more details and registration information, click here.
