Tech Men’s Hoops Falls in Opener – Friday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey last night, Jeffers edged Gaylord 1-0. The Jets face Sault Ste. Marie at the Soo Elks Showcase tonight at 8:00, then play Big Rapids tomorrow at 1:00.

MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team opened its season with a 74-68 loss to Minnesota-Duluth last night. The game was close all evening. The Bulldogs put it away with some late free throws after Tech misfired on a three-point shot that would have tied it with 20 seconds remaining. Freshman Kyle Monroe led the Huskies with 19 points. Bryan Heath scored 18, and Luke Heller had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tech women’s basketball team heads to Saint Paul, where they’ll take on Minnesota-Crookston tonight, and Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow evening.

The Huskies hockey team skates at Michigan State tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team entertains Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow night.

The NMU women’s basketball team is at the Lake Superior State tournament this weekend. The Wildcats will face Minnesota-Duluth tonight, and Minot State tomorrow afternoon.

Finlandia
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia men’s hockey team hosts Lawrence University tonight and tomorrow night. Both games begin at 7:15 at the Houghton County Arena. The women’s hockey team hosts Adrian College tomorrow afternoon at 4:00.

Former NHL player Peter White has joined the coaching staff of the Finlandia men’s hockey team. White starred at Michigan State University, then played 14 seasons professionally, with appearances for the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks. White will serve as the assistant coach for the Lions men’s varsity squad, and head coach of the junior varsity team.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team plays at Wisconsin-Platteville tonight, and at Wisconsin-Whitewater tomorrow evening. The women’s team plays at the Paul F. Knueppel Classic in Milwaukee this weekend. The Lions will face Wisconsin-Lutheran tonight, and Martin Luther College tomorrow afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Los Angeles Kings tonight. Brad Richards may be back on the ice, after missing a month with back problems. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Timberwolves tonight.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Tennessee Titans 19-13.

The Detroit Lions host the Oakland Raiders Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Green Bay Packers visit the Minnesota Vikings in a 4:25 game.

The Lions have filled one of their vacant leadership positions. Ron Wood will take over as team president. Wood has no football background, but has been President and CEO of Ford Estates for the past eight years. He’ll oversee the team’s business operations. The search for a new general manager continues.
