College Football

Finlandia University kicks off its football season tonight at home against Benedictine. Because of Tigers baseball on 99.3 the Lift, Finlandia coverage will begin at 5:40 on KBear 102.3.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team edged Minnesota-Crookston 1-0 last evening. Kiersen Korienek scored the game’s only goal.

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team will host Buena Vista this morning at 10 – hear the broadcast on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift. Finlandia will entertain Lakeland tomorrow afternoon at 3.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team will host Buena Vista today at noon, and Lakeland tomorrow at 1. Hear tomorrow’s game on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season last evening, falling 3-1 (27-25, 20-25, 23-25, and 18-25) to McKendree at the Parkside Tournament in Kenosha. The Huskies’ opening match against Upper Iowa yesterday afternoon was canceled midway through because of extreme heat in the arena. Tech will face Illinois-Springfield and Minnesota-Crookston today.

The Finlandia volleyball team opened its campaign at the Wisconsin Blast yesterday with a 3-0 loss to Beloit, and a 3-1 loss to Rockford. The Lions will play Wisconsin-Whitewater and Loras today.

MLB

Harold Castro singled home Ryan Kreidler with the winning run in the seventh inning, as the Tigers slipped past the Royals 5-4 last night. Willi Castro and Javier Báez homered. Drew Hutchison pitched into the sixth, and gave up all four K.C. runs. Andrew Chafin got the win in relief. Kreidler walked twice and scored twice in his major league debut.

The Tigers entertain the Royals again this evening. Michael Pineda will start against Jonathan Heasley. Coverage begins at 5:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit outfielder Austin Meadows will not return this season. After struggling with COVID-19, vertigo, and Achilles tendon problems in both ankles, Meadows admitted yesterday that he’s also been dealing with some mental health issues. He’s working out while receiving counseling, and hopes to return next season.

The Brewers fell 2-1 to the Diamondbacks last night. Eric Lauer took the tough loss, pitching into the seventh inning, and giving up both runs.

The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks again tonight. Corbin Burnes will start against Madison Bumgarner.
